Dutchbelly's 1988 4runner Build-up

Hey Hatmatt. If I'm reading your post right your gasket is for '84 and up 22re. Mine is pre 84. But thanks for the offer. I think I'll buy the kit from napa and be done with it but I'm busy working on swapping out my water heater and furnace so it might not happen till November.

No problem Dutch...I ran the part # for a pre 84 22-re and according to Toyodiy.com your engine uses a 11115-35010 head gasket, but when I run that # on Champion Toyota's website it says that part # has been superseeded by 11115-35050, which is the head gasket for a 84 and later. That would lead one to believe as the parts person told you it is no longer available from Toyota.
HOWEVER, when you do an aftermarket search on Rockauto and look at a Fel-pro head gasket for example here is what you find! The 1980 Celica was the last year for the 20R 2.2L engine and the head gasket for that is a Felpro 21187PT. In 1981 the Celica came with the new 2.4L 22R engine. The head gasket listed for that is a Felpro 26185PT or an Felpro 8807PT1. That is the same listing for all 22-re engines up until they were replaced by the 2RZ-fe and 3RZ-fe engines in 1996.
I'd check with Engbldr to be sure (he has forgot more about these engines than the rest of us will ever know), but what this tells me is that though Toyota changed the block height, intake and exhaust port shape of the heads on later models of this engine, they never changed the bolt pattern, the cylinder configuration, water jacket placement and size or the oil passages between the early and later 2.4L engines.
And according to all of the numbers that I have run all 2.4L 22r-re-rte use the same head gasket.
If I am right the head gasket is still here if you want it!

Sorry for the delay in my reply. That's awesome research on your part. Do you know the part number for the half moon seal I'll need as well? How much do you want foythe hendgasket? We can probably work out a cod or something.

As stated previously I'm kinda playing the waiting game for some parts before I can continue on the truck. I do have some small updates, however.

Finally found time at work to fit up my transfer case crossmember. It's just tacked in a couple spots for now. If everything fits up nicely when I try to put the tranny and engine back on the frame, I'll weld it up solid then. Better safe than sorry. I also took some time to go buy some parts I'll be needing later on:

Two fuel filters, two oil filters, the four gaskets I needed for my front hubs and four cone washers. It was unbelievably expensive for this small amount of parts. Any guesses? While I was at the dealership I took a walk around to see if I could find any of the new 4runners to snoop at. I didn't see any but I did find this in the one showroom:

Kinda crap photos through the glass, but that's one very nice looking cruizer. They wanted $8400 for it, which struck me as a pretty good deal, but not good enough for my limited budget.
