Dutchbelly's 1988 4runner Build-up

So I called Toyota to order the head gasket kit and they said they don't sell it anymore. Either she's on crack or maybe that's because this is a pre '84 22re and everyone has the 85 and on ones. I called napa and he can sell me a complete gasket set for 140 bucks or I can order them piece by piece. The head gasket is 40 bucks. Isn't there another gasket/seal at the back of the engine that ill need? A half circle type? I'll have to hit the search function. If anyone is willing to save me some time feel free to chime in.

Off topic, but does anyone have any expertise in air compressors? There is a sale at tsc on a 60 gallon Campbell hausfeld for 499 but I'm on a road trip to the states to pick up a puppy soon so I'm wondering if I should hold off and pick something up while I'm down there. Most things are cheaper in the states.

I have a 10 gallon 200psi C&H I got a killer deal on at Lowes..... It's BA! I would imagine that 60 gal is a beast and should suit all your needs. I am by no means an expert in this field, so research away... I can only speak from experience that I'm really pleased with my unit. I believe its 3.25 horse..... Runs my 350 pound Kobalt half inch drive air wrench with no problems, when using continuously. I used it to pull all of my somewhat rusty trailer bolts and nuts with no problem, just hammering away for almost a minute at a time...... I still have 150 psi C&H that is 20 years old... Somewhere around that age... It still works flawlessly to this day. I just need a little more power output.

Ya that's the one Mark. Really appreciate your input. I was going to just buy it but I was then thinking I'd buy a kobalt when I go pick up my dog. Only reason I was thinking that was the kobalt is 155psi. The ch is 135. I see yours is 200. The psi makes a huge difference on some air tools.

My mistake,... Mine is 8 gallon & 200psi ..... Something like this one........Maybe exactly this one, actually. .. haha

My airtank only goes to 125 and it works for most things but I have had to take the whole engine to a local mechanic just to break that bolt loose before and has been a few bed bolts that it just wouldnt break thru. My next compressor is going to be as high of the pressure I can get, if I was to suggest anything.

I have a 26 gallon craftsman compressor and it's been great for all my work on the truck. It was on sale 6 years ago for like $299 with a free (crappy) impact gun and ratchet tool. They usually have it on sale on sundays once a month or two....
For gaskets, maybe call Ted at ENGNBLDR and find out if the gaskets are compatible (84/85 22RE....I've never heard of an 84 22RE??). Then, order the OEM one for the year that would fit. I love ENGNBLDR, but for my head gasket I went OEM just because that's what I preferred.
There is an EGR cooler that bolts to the back of the head and has a gasket. And there are 2 half moon rubber gaskets for the head - they are in line with the cam and there is one at the back and one at the front - the valve cover seals them up. Hope that helps some.

Hey Dutch, have you thought about giving the Putney brothers a call over at 22 reperformance.com? They sell Nippon head gaskets and I would bet that they might be able to point you in the right direction.
I had 140,000 miles on my Felpro perma torque head gasket that was in the white first gen 4runner before it was totaled. I think in some ways it is a crap shoot, but it can't hurt to buy quality parts. I put in a factory Nippon gasket and it blew in 5 minutes. I never figured out exactly what happened, but I now have another Felpro in there for around 15,000 miles?
I always recommend factory, but it looks like you're having a hard time finding it. Call Ted engine builder and talk to him, he will not trying to sell you anything. Just realize, every single thing out there is going to give you a headache when it comes to people complaining or averages of bad reviews to good... Good luck finding what you need buddy

Thanks for all the helpful replies and advice everyone. The engine is I believe a 1983 22re from a celica. The 4runner never had the 22re till '85 and the engine has been updated and changed at that point so I know the gaskets won't be interchangeable. I've been busy lately trying to get the new place ready for winter so the truck has sorta hit the back burner again. That and we picked up a new puppy so he is keeping me busy. I think I might just buy he gasket kit from napa but you all have given me a lot of info to think over.

Yeah that's where I live. I grew up in the countryside. I'm happy to finally be living out of town again. I'm doing pretty good Chef. Just wish there were more hours in the day

Hey Dutch, haven't been on your thread in awhile, so I'm just catching up. Have you ordered your head gasket yet? I just ran the part #on toydiy.com, it's 11115-35030
And fits 08/84-06/85, but if you run the part # itself it comes up as fitting U.S. and Can. 4Runners up to 89.
I'm not in the country right now and I won't be home until Tuesday, but I have a complete 22re gasket kit from Engnbldr if your interested, but more importantly I've got a spare from my 22rte kit that I'm not using, I went with a layered composite gasket. Anyway if you want to compare this one to your existing, I can send it out to you if you want to pay the shipping, if it will work then we'll sort out what it's worth.
