Day Three of the tear down complete. I should be further, but I had too deal with Two super long portions of the wire harness. I do not like the changes that Toyota made to the wire harness for the second generation pickup. Toyota decided too run two long sections through the passage between intake port Two and Three. One going to the fire wall down along the inner driver side fender to the Air Flow Meter, and the other down under the starter, over the bell-housing, around the shifter and terminates at the Oxygen sensor, but along it's path it also connects to the four wheel drive switch and the safety neutral switch. In other words it took me some time between these past Two day too fish them through and past any obstruction. Here are Two pictures showing the length of the harness.



Other then the harness I removed all of the intake and the exhaust. Got some pictures of that for good measure as well



Best news so far has been no broken bolt heads, strips nuts, or any frustrating fasteners of any kind so far.

I will be working on the head removal tomorrow and perhaps get the timing cover etc. removed off the front of the block.

LCE says the new rotating assembly will be here Thursday. I will certain post picks of the unboxing.

94mm stroke and 93mm bore
I am keeping the head stock for now since the head and cam is in really good shape.

DAY THREE
So today I got the head off. Was not to bad today, but the heater core hoses would not let go of the nipples, so I had to work around them. I did not find anything obvious regarding the knock other then this odd part of the head gasket sticking into the combustion chamber. I will rotate the assembly later to see if the piston makes contact with it; here is a picture of number Two cylinder.

Head looks good, all the valves are seated correctly.


This is number Two cylinder. In the upper left near the exhaust valve you can see impression of the spot from the head gasket.


I found some more of the bar's leak remains from the previous owner in the water jacket ports. Luckily the bar's leak did not impede water flow that I can tell. At least I will be free of any bar's leak after the rebuild. Checkout all the buildup


Tomorrow the timing cover comes off and then I drain the oil.

 

9.7 To 1 compression ratio sounds very turbo friendly.

 

Yeah, it is turbo friendly to about 2psi. The turbo lag would be dreddful to wait through; LOL.

Today I found the source of the knock. I pulled all of the pistons and as I was doing so I discovered several damaged rod journal bearings. Cylinder number One had spun which created play at the journal.

Cylinders look like they have over heated in the past. I am betting the Bar's Leak reducing flow could have caused the over heating.


I think I made the right choice by getting a whole new bottom end.

UPDATE
I got the block out finally.

 

Completely clean and bare block all ready for it's adventure at the machine shop.

 

I got another shipment in today.

It is a new direct fit Two row all aluminum CHAMPION radiator ( http://209yota1.com/products/all-alu...95-22re-toyota ), and I will be converting to EVANS WATERLESS COOLANT.

 

That thing is sexy!

Okay, gosh Troy, I was saving the pictures I was taking so to make one large post, but I will be nice and give you some more yota porn.

I have been cleaning up the head and some other parts while the block and new rotating assembly is in the machine shop. Here is what the finished parts look like.

I am out of paint and will be picking up more tomorrow. I am only painting steel parts and keeping the aluminum natural.

 

Looking good! Thanks for posting the link to the radiator, I book marked it for later. When I needed a radiator last year I looked all over for an aluminum one in that price range. Everyone was either out of stock or more expensive. I finally went with a Koyo Racing aluminum radiator, but it was around $325...it's still holding up after hitting a deer last fall and putting the fan into it, looks like it's twisted a bit too, it hasn't leaked but kind of worrisome, always have one eye on the temp gauge lol.
Im curious to see how you like the waterless coolant, thought about trying it too.

Your welcome for the link Rusted. I was search for hours over about three days. I am kind of obsessive about accumulating every avenue of research data so I am pretty good at finding what I am looking for.

I am sure that the waterless coolant will be great. I learned about it over a decade ago and have thought about converting to it for many years. however, I really could never bring myself too do the work needed too extract all of the water from the cooling system. Since I am rebuilding the engine to the extent of a 2.6liter 22re, it made sense to me too finally make the investment into waterless coolant.

Thanks, the good work will keep showing up; as of yesterday, after contacting the machine shop, I learned no work has been done on my order as of yet. I should have plenty of time too get every part clean, painted and put together into subassemblies.

 

Kind of looking forward to comparing our trucks. They should be pretty evenly matched geating/tire-wise. Wonder what the power difference will be like.

 

I can not say that I have even thought about that Troy. To bad our Yota(s) are so different regarding body type and weight, besides the auto tranny verses my Five speed. We will have to try each others and keep our butt dynos well calibrated.

with the top off, they should be close in weight. i mean maybe a hundred pounds or so. its the trans that kills it. if i were to stumble across an R151 with transfer case, id swap in an instant.
