Also, narrowing down my OBA set up, still.... I KNOW, but I'm kinda changing direction, at least for now, so I'm glad I waited to do this.

1. I do NOT know that I want everything permanently mounted. I like the idea of having this come with me to any vehicle. Especially if I break down and need to run with someone else who ends up needing air; Or, for the Honda or whatever other toys I MIGHT be grabbing in the near future..

2. I found MANY loving the AZ compressors.... Air Zenith. 100% @ 200PSI with some accessories and weather proof if I wanted to mount it..... AND, 4.48 CFM! So that got me thinking, do I really need a tank and all that, just for airing up tires? And, if I don't, why mount the dayum thing? 331$ was the cheapest I could find the Zenith. But it's basically twice as fast and powerful as the Viair 480C.

3. Viair makes good stuff, I totally have confidence that I would get a lasting unit through them. BUT, the Ultra Kit is probably full of things that I might not need, and gets me up to 470$ pretty quickly. Without the compressor mounting bracket, too. (Ultra On Board Air Kit with 480C and 2.5 Gallon Tank and lots of nicknacks.....) .... I would basically need the tank or 2 480C's to get the same performance, if I'm getting all this correctly.

Don't hesitate to tell me why I should absolutely have a Tank and Hard mount everything! Please, I am still learning. I just want to make this decision once, and when I've made it, I want to be happy, PERIOD! I would just go to Oasis, etc., .... but I don't need an 1000$* System! lol... Would be nice, but I'm not so impatient that I can not wait 2 Minutes per tire, ya know?

(ALSO, read carefully when you're studying this. I just realized that a few sellers don't list WHICH 35x12.50 they are posting their results for.... Because a 35x12.50x20 fills a LILLLLLLLL faster than a 35x12.50x15! lol.) ..... I'm not sure on this, but I KNOW that MANY vendors omit things for the sake of selling a target item. Just read all the threads on the ARB Twin Compressor Kit set up..... DEFINITELY read it if you're thinking that 448$ for that from eBay is all you'll be spending. NO WAY, Jose! hahaha.

I'm going to make my decision in the next couple days, maybe sooner... But, I just wanted to know if anyone had any more to add

Ian, just saying, "You sure you want this outside?"... it got me thinking. Yes, in CA it's much more dry where I'm at, ....so having rust as a enemy is not likely as much as back east... BUT, it made me think if I want this hard mounted at all. I mean, ....why does it have to be? I could still have a tank mounted and then jack into it as I get done wheeling... Pull whichever compressor out of it's dry box, safely preserved.... then air back up at the end of the day(or when needed! lol).

Can someone tell me, plain and simple.....

* If I don't have a tank mounted..... Would a GOOD compressor fill 35's any slower, just due to the absence of said 2.5 Gallon or so Tank??

 

When I was shopping for an SAS kit, LROR called me back. They got my business. And Inchworm was good on the 5:29 thirds. Plus it was close 200 mile round trip. Thats close.

 

Guys, a nice and very polite Yotatech member has asked me if I had any thoughts on a listing. I'm not sure on the rules on this but I'm not trying to sell it I'm just asking for anybody who wouldn't mind putting their two cents on whether he should consider this truck or not. The guy is asking more than 10 grand, and granted, its very clean and a lot has been invested... It's just such a serious purchase I don't feel comfortable saying, "Of course! Go for it!" ....

I don't expect any of you to do that either, I just wondered if people could do one quick post stating why they thought it was or wasn't even worth considering? I want to help, and yet I'm not sure I would know exactly what this thing is worth. My guess is more like six thousand... But I figured I would post it anyway...

Looks like a very nice specimen. Really hard to say. It definitely looks like its worth that much. I would definitely check it out thoroughly before spending that much on it. Definitely a mall crawler. Would hate to see that get thrashed on the trail.

I can't see $10K, but I am more of the put $10K into a truck to make it worth $5k kind of guy though.
Why get a single axle truck if you are not going to wheel? And why pay $10k for a classic that sweet if you are going to take out and beat on it?
That truck would be the awsomest mall crawler though, and for that it MAY be worth $8k top dollar in my humble opinion.

Viair started and still is a company aimed at low riders with air tanks. Honestly they are not worth it. All their compressors are 33% duty cycle. They just jumped on the off road wagon/ redid their boxes with the same old ass compressor saying this unit is for 35 inch tires and what not.

If you wanna research and see what's good. See what expedition guys uses. They actually use their stuff in places where failure is no option IMO.

ARB single compressor are all 33% as well. They just did the twin to compete against Viair because I think they both did a 100% duty cycle.

For the money ARB and Viair isn't worth it. Both companies compressors are not really aimed at airing up tires. But since the trend for OBA blew up a year or two back. They just redid their marketing to say we can fill your tires too.

I used to get into it with a wheeler about his Viair and my PUMA. Always saying his unit is faster. Lol he is running two compressors and can barely keep up with one of mine. For what he spent I can I have two puma and air up two tires while his two Viair is needed for 1 tire at a time.

Sorry for my rant. I just hate when people get brain washed into certain names.
For the money and what you said the specs are. I would run AZ compressor if I had the money. Specs are impressive. I was like you and didn't want to hard mount it cuz I have three trucks now. Anyways for me I rather have three compressors. One for each truck. For me each one of my rig is a little different from each so I plan to gear out each one accordingly even if it means buy two or three of something. Again it's just me and I like to have each rig ready to go. I get last minute invite for trips ad all I have to do is ice chest and food. I'm ready to roll!! Haha.

Just checking in. I am not much help for Onboard Air. Never done anything like that.

As far a the 85 on craigslist, I might have to swap trucks and let them think someone vandalized it.lol.. It is nice and a clean truck. Price??? I dont know. It looks to me like it has about 1988 Chevy Blazer Seats in it. If it was more orginal maybe. I wish I had that kind of cash as I would build one for that myself.

 

I haven't heard about Viair but they tried to give me a "free" ARB compressor with my ARB locker, but every salesperson that I talked to admitted that that compressor was not that great for airing up tires, so I took the substantial discount instead.
I think that if you use an ARB compressor with an ARB locker that the wiring is a little more straight foreword.
I use the MV50, an air tank, a switch on the dash and a pressure switch so that I have air when ever I need to lock the diff. Air storage also helps with the duty cycle issues that my compressor has when trying to fill four 33" tires.

If and when I do an arb front locker. I would use their compressor so it's only used for the locker. Heard arb will void any warranty if you don't use their compressor. Plus it's free currently with purchase of locker

Pick up any low rider magainze and you will see like 100 gallon air tanks and 4 plus viair compressors lol.

It's really up to the buyer but I would do a harbor freight compressor before paying extra for just a name and still be lacking in performance.

My puma ran 100% if the time and filled up like 12 32inch tires without turning off. Only had a 1.5 tank which was emptied on the 1st tire so the rest of the time. The compressor was doing all the work. I have since added a bigger tank and can fill one tire from 12 to 35psi in like 45sec and still had 75psi on the gauge. My compressor max psi when fully charged is like 125-130psi. I was impressive

 

They are definitely cool! Scotty is another one that always surprises people because he usually answers the phone himself. I never had too hard of a time getting ahold of him either. He does nice work, too. LROR just got my business again on the deflator... Definitely stoked to have that. My hands are so overworked and anything that I can do 2 slow down the inevitable carpal tunnel damage is welcomed! Hahahahaha

Yeah, totally depends on personal preference, I agree. I guess I could say that it's worth 10 grand a lot more than some of the pieces of crap out there that they are selling for that... So even if it is just a daily driver, as long as it is as clean and reliable as one would hope, it should go and go and go and do it in style, for anyone who doesn't mind spending 10k on a pick up that is 28 years old.

I hear what you're saying, but as far as I know the Viair 440C and 480C are both 100% duty, former at 100%/70psi and 50%/150psi... The latter, 100%/90psi and 50% /200psi ...... I've also seen a lot of people over the last several years I've been using their Ultra duty systems with pleased results. Of course they jumped on the four-wheel-drive bandwagon, & I understand that, that has to be read carefully through... I believe the 480C is their highest output model at the moment... They had a 494C, but it seems that it is unavailable at this point. A couple truckers I know swear by the Viairs above many other models but do say that there are higher and models that put out more power for sure. Most truckers use dual compressors and larger tank. My buddy explain to the other day that his 60 gallon tank can run to crack all four tires lose before it kicks on again, whereas his 10 gallons does one tire and begins to kick on again... So in reality, how much is adding a 2.5 gallon tank a factor in the practical realm? The other problem is that many people have had them get smashed, when they are mounted under the truck. The only place that I can see that would be practical to mount that size of a tank would be in the spare tire carrier location. I could mount a skid plate under it where it would be a bit more protected in the event of a four foot Boulder intrusion as I slide over and jack knife a bit on certain inclines ... But that seems to be yet another factor that could get in the way/cause a problem if it goes awry in some way.. With a quality compressor, I can click it on an air up fairly quickly without the compressor going into 'max heat auto shut off'. As far as I can see, many of the pros use anything from the MV 90, ARB twin, Viair, and I guess you could say that some of the more serious expedition rigs in the outback and so forth tend to run permanent duty a/c conversions or whatever, or Extreme Aire, Oasis, often with co2 backup or vice versa, co2 and a compressor back up. Bit as far as I know, while I'm not sold on either, the ARB Twin and Viair 480C are both constant duty/100% set ups. Hand, also from what I've read, it doesn't seem that most of them are having problems and they are pretty reliable. I just figured I would start out was a really good but not quite $1000 compressor. Hahaha. I'm not discounting anything with you said and I am NOT personally tested any of them. I have a larger slime compressor, its always done OK with 31's, but 35 inch tires are a whole nother story, plain and simple. On a little compressor like that the last 4 inches tall and 2 inches wider is another 8 minutes! Lol. Not to mention the thing can't handle running that long. But I will definitely keep it as it does provide that emergency slime kit which has work for me more than once on sidewall damage. Its not meant to drive home 500 miles long but it definitely can get you out of there. Like I said, I'm not discounting anything you said... I'm not qualified to. I just wanted to declare that I do know plenty of people that are happy with either one. Then again, maybe they've never use anything else right?



As I said below, I definitely have seen that's right and all the others on 4 X 4 wire. Great write ups and I considered I'm so many different options that I want to just confusing myself! Lol. As I also said below, its not that I am opposed to getting a tank it's just that I've read many specialists and expedition professionals that state that with a hundred percent duty cycle compressor, if all you are doing is filling tires then there's really no point to the tanks. I think with air tool that makes more sense because you want to let it charge up the tank and then run a little bit longer at a time with your air tools.... And like Toyota said, there are a lot of air bag suspension and lowering kits and train horns and so forth that are really common right now which you absolutely do need a tank for optimal lead times.

Trust me, many of us are excited to see that 85 extra cab Terryized! Lol. I can understand the dudes position and that he just wants to get one completely ready to go and clean and unmolested to some degree.... but 10 grand? It may very well be worth it, and I'm sure it is to someone.... Its just difficult for me to say because for me I would rather do what you do and restore it and verify through mechanics and specialists that it is worth whatever I ask for it.

Hey Matt, thanx man! Yeah, I read the 4x4 wire reports, all of them. I just wasn't sure if I would need a reservoir tank if I got a higher end compressor. I've read mini threads and including one of the 4x4 wire ones where a guy basically says, "for most people if you are just a ring of tires and you have a really good hundred percent duty compressor, there really is no point in a tank." ....

MV90 is another one I read up on and it seems reliable and very cheap in comparison to some.

As far as Viair, I detailed above, under Toyo's quote, some of what I think is a misconception, as often, people are thinking of the older models.

Nonetheless, people also are thinking of the ARB single compressor and not the twins which supposably is also a hundred percent duty and puts out 6.4 CFM max. I'm not opposed to that one but it is definitely larger in with and would be hard to stash in the panel or something discreet like that.

As far as the air, I appreciate that is well, I hope nobody is getting fed up with me... I just like to do things right the first time and I keep learning more as I go, so I'm glad I have held off to this point, and that's all that matters I suppose. I am likely leaning toward the Air Zenith OB2..... I like what I'm reading and have read and I think the only reason more people don't have it is just because it's a little more pricey then people want to spend. I totally understand that, & I also understand sometimes it's just a matter of people can afford it and I can relate to that as well. Sometimes I just think its better to spend a little more the first time to avoid spending more than you ever planned re doing things down the road on the short end.

I'm going to try and get ahold of the guy with the TTTS switch number 2, today, and see if I can't knock all of that crap out all at once.

*** I also want to mention that something interesting happens. When I went to wash my truck after driving it around for 2 hours, I pressure washed all the mud out and it came out nice... As I was cleaning out the lower fans of the condenser and all that, I thought about how there must be some type of heat related message going to the AC VSV? I'm not sure on this, but I found it interesting that I drove around after washing it for about a block and turned on the AC and up went the idle. It really seems to be intermittent and while it is probably a wiring issue or some confusion in the ECU or in between, I just wondered if anybody knew if there was a relationship between that switch number 2 and the AC VSV.

I figured I would look into that really quick and make a list of the things that I shouldn't even bother looking for from Toyota any longer. I'm going to try those other couple sites, but the bottom line is... A lot of these things are being discontinued. Also, look at the cold start injector and fuel injector part numbers... They've both been updated. I'm not sure if that is because they had so many problems between 1985 - 1987..... But lots of things were changed by Toyota, I know this because when I went down to get parts many times they would tell me this or that had been updated 6 times, etc....

The last time I took my Miata to a shop was two years ago with a receipt of $1300. That was the last time I went to a mechanic and since then been trying to fix issues myself. But I am positive that one day I will be there with a Toyota too. At this point, I can't demand too much of me. Until then I am jealous of you guys.

Sorry for a short detour. Coming to the point, I am not one of those guys who is buying a truck for investment purpose or to make a garage queen. So "mint" does not mean much to me. But, who wants to pass up a nice example like this. Of course this is not cheap for me, but trust me, in this part of country I have seen bad examples than that at 6-8K. As you know, I have been searching for almost 10 months now.

I am still negotiating with this seller and he seems to be honest and hard to negotiate with. As you mentioned, I am going to take to a mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection. My plan is to fly down to Texas and drive the truck back home. I have a conference in Texas, so flying there is taken care of. I also started a new thread to see any members are in and around San Antonio that could help me. There are 119 views but no response . I would be happy if someone could help me.

I believe it goes right in the top of that banjo fitting eliminator nut..... I have not looked up the instructions or anything of the sort, I just thought it was interesting. & I know its possible... I sure wish I had a gauge in there now so I can tell if I'm dropping pressure under hot soak. The new parts well hopefully at least help a little. It might not solve my gremlin, the nasty low idle hot restart gremlin that is... At least it's a start on the beginning of a process of elimination. And they are supposed to be upgraded to the part numbers anyway.

Anyway, I thought it screwed right into one of those threads in the banjo elimination kit portion.... I'm sure there's a tech right up on it I'll have to find it.

I know that arb and viair has a 100% duty cycle ones but for the $$$. Not to many people opt for them and figure hey it's an ARB or Viair so it must be good. I'm sure they are but for the money. I just can't justify it. It's funny that arb just takes their old unit and doubles it up to make 100% duty and more cfm. Same with viair doubling up in compressors to keep up. Their two compressors combine is bigger and takes up more room than one of mine compressors. You really can't go wrong with any of the ones your looking at as long as they are 100% duty. I just don't trust that two 33% duty cycle compressors can run as long as a true 100% one. If your just airing up 4 tires than your ok. I just find myself airing up 8-16 tires at a time sometimes lol.

A tank isn't needed but it sure is nice to kick the compressor on a few minutes before coming to the end of the trail. That extra air will get that 1st tire up in no time. As your putting the tire cap on and walking to the next tire. Basically anytime it's not pumping the tire. It charges the tank. The compressor is running anyways why waste it.

I have an extra tank tuck where the spare would go and it sits pretty high up once your remove the spare tire plate/chain assembly. All my friends have a tank under there and drives over bigger rocks without issues than again we pick our lines and don't do the boring point and drive cuz I'm locked and SA lol.

 

I like this for diagnostic purpose. I wonder if OK to leave it installed, or should it only be installed while troubleshooting? Would it handle constant vibration and high temps of the engine compartment?

For real-time monitoring, what's a better / more reliable practice:

1. To run a hose to the dash and install this hydraulic gauge there? OR
2. To install pressure sensor (transducer) and run wire to electrical gauge on dash?

Would surely appreciate if anyone who's used this before can post his experience.
