Boma23's 1994 Hilux Surf KZN130 Build-Up Thread
afternoon' all
I'm a UK ex-pat living in the BVI, Caribbean, so the the US forums are now my nearest to home, and probably where I'll be making use of the classifieds soon, when I start with the tweaking...
I shipped my 94 Hilux Surf out with me, SSRX-LTd Auto, 70,000mls from new, with the 3.0 TD lump, great truck for this bumpy little island.
Currently standard, apart from later gen 3 16x7s with BFG Dueller 265/70/16, a 2" spring lift in the rear, slightly wound up torsion bars at the front, and home made roof rack.
Plans are for an ARB front bumper, to replace the lightly dinged OEM one, as the rot has also started biting, 1.5" risers on the front, decent sliders to replace the OEM door runners, a winch and rear locker/under armour at some point... no rush though as the truck has handled everything thrown at it so far, mainly mild off road (apart from ripping the stupid stick-out OEM exhaust off on some heavy brush - it's been nipped and tucked since photos).

Nice lookin truck, welcome to YT. I was down in Costa Rica this winter in the cuts and people really loved their Toyotas there. All the taxi drivers drove them on the dirt roads. Definitely a good choice.

thanks for the welcome. think the only other car I would consider is a turbo Forrester for these parts, and am planning on one of them too. you genuinely do need 4x4 in normal life fairly regularly here...

What wheels are those? I like them, hard to find decent wheels for our trucks in the states. Most of the manufacturers make blinged out chrome withfake beadlocks. I still can't believe anyone buys that stuff.

the wheels were a bonus - they're std Gen3 items from the Jap Hilux Surf, got a really nice dish and really suit the truck. Fitted with brand new Duellers too when I bought her
At some point I'd like to get something lighter, (steels?) as they weigh a fair bit and must hit the performance, but I'm hitting the sensible age having blown silly money on old cars before!

I'm surprised to hear those are heavy, I'd be curious to know what they weigh. They look fairly light. My experience has been that the steel wheels are very heavy for their size, but they are durable, cheap and look alright.
I wanted to step up to a 35inch tire, but I also wanted to run the GY Duratracs. So I had to step up to a 16 inch wheel as well. It would have been cheaper to stick with some used OEM toyota wheels, but I really couldn't find any I liked and they were all 23-25 lbs or something like that.
I ended up with the Konig Countersteers, they are 19 lbs each and with the 0mm offset i really wanted. It's still a heavy wheel combo because the tires are 64LBS each.
Before that I was running 33x10.5R15 KM2s on the same wheel you have as a spare. That wheel is a lot lighter than I guessed it would be, it looks heavy. I didn't have a scale when I had them dismounted, but I am definitely thinking sub 20LBS. I would have stayed with that wheel, but it's a little narrow at 7 inches wide and the tire selection in 35x12.5R15 is really bad if you don't want a full M/T.

I've got to say i'm moaning about them being heavy, but this comes from someone who has just given up his track Integra and used to be into lots of circuit days, so i'm a complete Nazi with wheel weights
Event the difference between 15" and 16" on my 200BHP 1080KG Integra could really be felt on acceleration, so I'm keen to find a nice combo on this truck (although i know it's no speed demon). First time taking the wheel off the truck i was genuinely shocked how heavy. Got some green stuff pads coming for it soon, so will weight the whole wheel tyre combo then, and find out if they are as bad or if I'm being paranoid... Konig are great wheels, used to make some great lightweight and more importantly strong forged wheels for track cars.
I'd love to find a resource that compares tyre weights for same sizes - i put some big reinforced truck tyres on my spare battered old Zook Sidekick, and that barely gets out of 1st on some hills it was comfortable in second gear before now lol

just read your build up thread - that's some impressive work, and those Konigs are a great choice. Truck looks pretty sick. The TE37s were one of my fave wheels on the Teg as well, I had the CE28s in 15 and 16s... seems you also favour a similar choice in bimmers - I had a silver E36 M3 evo a few years back, stonking motor!
