after I took the exhaust manifold off a looooooong time ago....all but 4 studs came out. i guess normally that would be a bad thing but in our case, I got new studs from LCE because of the headers.

they were really stuck there. I came up with an idea that I am sure is no NEW trick, but thought it was cool anyways. I threaded 2 exhaust nuts on thinking the outer one would hold tight while turning the inner one to loosen the stud.....wrong....but able to hold the outer one with a ratchet while turning the inner one with an open end wrench did the trick......on 3 of them. of course, I called Joe out so he could do the last one.....so of course, that was the one we had a problem with.


modified the method a bit by removing the outer nut and sliding the wrench on and then trapping the wrench in there by putting the other nut on.......holding the ratchet and hitting the wrench with a small sledge did the trick








and Mark.....here is the mess I really have to deal with.....being that I am the parts washer.....

OK....final pics for the day.

still had the itch......so we vacuumed the crud off the valve covers and got the passenger's side one off. took out the PCV valve too.

and just because we wanted to see how the color would look, we degreased and painted the cover green. we like it. it's a keeper



and this is how it's going to sit until the next episode. ran out of paint too. going to just do a little red here and there. don't want it to look like a box of crayons in there. going to do the hooks in red and motor mounts red too.

Ok....so as anyone can plainly see, oily gunk is everywhere. so, before this motor goes back in, everything needs to be cleaned. Not only the motor itself, but the engine bay etc.

so I just ordered this------>>>> http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/pr...oductId=127696 in hopes that it will help the process. as far as cleaning goes I DO NOT plan on using ENGINE BRITE or anything like that....that stuff smells terrible with it's heavy petroleum smell and leaves a residue.....I assume, on purpose for future cleaning.

my plan is to use something like the SIMPLE GREEN foaming stuff (have used it elsewhere and it works nicely) or the scrubbing bubbles of DOW BATHROOM CLEANER.

for the heads........well......I am going to call around and see how much it would cost to get them done.....and by "DONE", I mean, cleaned, checked for warpage and checked for cracks. the cleaning part I could do once they are fully disassembled (cams etc out) but I would really like to have them officially "checked". I know everyone will say that that's what they would do at this point, but I am not going to just pee away money to have someone tell me what I feel I already know And, that is that the heads are fine.

when we get to the point of taking the heads off and all that is involved in that, I will determine what I am doing then.

Good job guys, starting to look like a 3.0 on the bottom end. Im sure you had a good time after the break. Cleaning involves a great bit of time, but is one of those things that got to be done. Having someone cleaning sure makes it alot easier.

took apart 1 motor mount.....keeping them separate because I assume they aren't interchangeable.

might have been a little too quick with the painting because I painted with rusty metal black and the the red engine paint and it didn't cover well.....I let it dry now for about an hour and it seemed to cover better. will have to keep at it.

coming along nicely. not sure if you have used or tired purple power degreaser but that stuff works really good. just spray some on and let it sit. hose it off or pressure was it off for better result. cleans the grease and gunk right off

 

I'll second the purple power degreaser. It what I used to clean off my power steering gearbox in my build thread.

 

Glad to see it's moving along again! I'm really enjoying your build. When I did my heads it was $200 for clean, resurface, pressure test and a valve grind. I didn't think that was too bad. Can't wait to put them to use though

I thought I remembered something about the purple stuff and aluminum and staining it like a rainbow. we used to use something called "chemeeze" in the fire department and it was bad for aluminum...and it was purple.
