chrisv's 84 pickup build

hello everyone Im new to yotatech but my dad "jason in tn" has been a member for a long time,
I have wanted a toyota of my own since dad got his 86 4runner but I just havent came across one I could afford.
well the other day dad was checking on some parts and got a lead on a pickup that had been sitting for awhile so we went and checked it out talked to the owner and where able to make a deal.
the truck is a base model 84 the owner drove it up untill about a year ago he said the battery went dead and he just never took the time to do anything with it so we are hopeing he is being honest and there are no major issues.
okay a few pics of what it looked like when we found it.

as you can see the bed is shot but the cab and frame are solid, we are trying to come up with a build plan but for the time being getting mechanicly sound is priority as this will be my daily driver. we will probablly pull the bed a build some sort of flat bed.
over time I want to make more of a wheeling rig and as those changes and Ideas come along I will update my thread.
this will be a slow build for awhile as dad has his on 3 yota projects in the works and Im broke lol.
thanks for checking in.

Its a shame the po left it under that tree I dont think the paint was to bad before. it needs some work but its a good base to start with. read thru different builds on yota tech and you will be able to learn a lot and get a lot of cool ideas for your build.

I think thats the plan for now anyway, I can fab up a flat bed way faster than fixing the box. Unless he can find a really good deal on another bed. Ive gotta get my 86 where I can move it so we can get this one in the shop and really go over it.

Right on, Chris! You got a great dude, in your Pop's, to guide you through getting that thing back up to snuff

Had a Blueberry Blue 86 Shorty that was SICK! ..... Didn't start out that way.. Found a bed pretty quick and slapped it on, had it painted and then spent a few weeks off and on finding interior stuff... Wound up with a really sweet rig. From there I went to 4Runners(1st Gen) and I just love the look of the bodies on these years.

KILL IT!

Hello Chris, have heard alot about you from your dad. Truck looks solid other then the bed. I think you would be surprised at what a little rubbing compound and some elbow grease would do to the rest of the truck.

I am more comfortable in the 22re world but having two motors that are 22rs with a couple of pumps of the skinny pedal and how fast it can start, I am really starting to like them. Looking forward to your build.

I'll keep in touch with Your Dad and then see if I can't help when I see something/if I see something, ya feel me? haha...

Start posting up some more pics, man... even if the work is minimal, k?

Oh boy.... C'MON DAD! hahaha.... JK, I know how it is. Interesting... How come you're not going with a new/fresh Bed, Jason/Chris? Just curious.... Why take the time 'building' a flatbed, Jason, when you can slap a bed on it in a half day? Again... JUST CURIOUS, nothing against flatbeds... Just love the look of these with the bed on there, etc., ya know?

Thanks for spllllllaining it to me! haha.

Im keeping my eyes open for a bed but ones in good shape are rare around here so the flat bed is an option we are kinda leaning that way at the moment just so we have an idea of what we might want to build if it comes to that. I think he would prefer a stock bed as would I so we are gonna try and go that route.

Whichever bed you go with they are really handy. I miss having my flatbed already as I used it alot. Either way you will like it. Will be looking forward to your build. Doing a truck should be alot easier then a Runner.

I look equally forward to whatever comes! NOT EVEN dogging flatbeds... Just LOVE having the option of slapping a shell on and 'keeping the bugs out' etc., ... and locking things up a lil better(not much, but a lil, haha).. I LOVE those flatbed 'boxtube' types... Like a regular bed but just that framed look of the 'cage' stuff. (Not box.... but like the TG bumper size tubing?

Anyway, it'll be cool, I know it!!

Ok we were finaly able to get this thing home "with a few issues along the way" so its time for the fun to begin.
I decided to try and start it before we moved it and with a little coxing it fired up and ran great for a truck thats been sitting for awhile, ran for about 10 min or so and decided to see if it would move under its own power and the engine died, tried to restart it and when it fired up oh my lord it had a rattle in the engine I imediatly thought the worst because it really sounded like a spun bearing, what was I thinking trying to start an engine with out a thourogh once over.
well we decided to pull it home "it was only a mile or two" and dig into it there. had chris go out and start fixing a few problems that jumped out at me like the starter about to fall off and a few other things added some oil and water, and thought we would give it a try again and see if I could narrow down the source of the scarie rattle well when it fired up the rattle was gone and it was back to puring like a kitten. still not sure what it was but atleast for the moment my stress level is down.
decided to try and drive it a little and as to be exspected everything was still it didnt want to roll but we got it down the road aand back a mile or so. the truck really runs great, the brakes need some seriuos attention as well as lubeing everything up and some general TLC valve cover gasket etc, I think chris is gonna have a nice little truck if hes willing to put a little time in to it.
ok for a few pics

first project will be to get the brakes up to par you can always get one to move getting one tostop is a different issue. cleaning it up will be a big first step as well, hopeing most of the oil all over the engine is from the long neglected valve cover gasket, oil change and tune up etc is also at the top of the list.
we will keep you guys updated as we move along, thanks for checking in.

That interior is in awesome shape! Better than mine, I think. The bed is a tragedy, huh... I hope you find something. A friend of a friend in Atlanta might have something. I'll get him to ask.

What part of Tennessee are you guys in?

Glad to hear the rattle is gone. Hopefully it wont come back or is something minor. Take the bed off and it is looks to be an excellent little truck. Congratz on getting it home. Will be looking forward to what is to come.
