Boomtacoma's 85 Ext Cab Build up
#162
I got most of my skins put on the tube doors. I decided to only skin 2 of the 4 openings on each tube door. I need to cut the last one out and get it welded on (after I replace a part on the plasma).
On to the axle swap.
I have been accumulating some parts as of late. Im going to build the 14B first and then move on to the D60 which I still have to pick up. Probably just going to do leafs front and rear unless I find some more $$ laying around.
So far I have a set of 538 thick gears, disc brake kit from Gubni, Barnes diff cover, HAD 14B to Toyota flange, Ruff Stuff u-bolts, perches, plates, and 14B pinion guard.
Need to make a decision on which locker I want to go with in the next few days. More than likely a Detroit.
That should get me started on the rear for now.
Once the rear goes in, I will sell the ifs rear, pull the front axle and sell the wheels/tires since I want 17's.
That SHOULD pay for the front axle and at least a set of 40's (I hope).

They're going....LONG story....best told over a beer. Long story short/Readers Digest version: Downsized a bit, replaced two projects with something a little more complete/streetable in current form. I'm sure I'll start a build thread at some point to document the whole thing!

Good deal. Interested in what you are working on for sure.
I serioulsy can't wait to swap in the new axles.
Added a little boom to the red truck over the weekend. A single Punch 10 and an older Alpine 5 Ch amplifier.
Cost = free.
Sounds pretty decent. I need to play with the settings on my head unit some more tomorrow. It's a little late to be bassin in the garage.
Everything worked on the first try.
Initial test

Cleaned it up a little

I got all of the trim installed last night.
Just need to put the passenger seat back in this evening.

Now this is the build thread I've been looking for! I recently picked up an 84 ec and plan on using your build as a guide. Awesome truck and great tech. If you don't mind I will be sending you some pm's when I get into this for advise from time to time.

I should have some wheeling pics from K2 this weekend for the TLCA event. I'm trailering the truck for the first time. No telling what will happen this weekend since I don't have to worry about getting it home on its own power now

Here are a few pics from K2 this past weekend. I managed not to survive unscathed except for a driveshaft issue. This park continues to impress with some great wheeling!

I have been slacking on pics as of late.
Got my light bar finished and painted. I picked up a 42" radius bar on Amazon that didn't break my wallet. I ran the wiring up from under the hood and up the A-pillar to supply power for the light. I used grommets and some clear poly sealant to seal everything up. I have about a 1/4 inch gap between the bottom of the bar and the roof. I also moved the mount back further to reduce any unwanted glare off of the hood and windshield.

Some Wheeling pics from Lonestar Jamboree 10
So I finally got around to putting all of my pics together.
Started off on with a little hard luck on Thursday on JB Turnpike.

Thank god for the cage. This is the most damage I have had ever in one weekend.
Got it recovered and wheeled the rest of the weekend. I think I spent more time fixing trail damage than wheeling but that is part of it. I still had a great time.

Now it's time to do a little body work and get on with the axle swap. Lots of work ahead.

I picked up my front axle over the weekend. Got it unloaded and started tearing it apart this evening. Turns out the axle has drive flanges. I removed the tie rod and pulled the axles. Looked ok. Had a couple of areas that looked like they were starting to wear a little. I also pulled the cover to verify what gearing I have which is 3.54. Now I know what gears and locker I need to pick up. Looks like the BOM# is no more. I'm pretty sure it's a chevy axle though. This is one heavy SOB. I'm picking up another set of jack stands and an engine hoist this week so I don't have to work on the ground. Then I will start burning off the all the unneeded bracketry and clean the axle up some more.

Then I got the knuckles and hubs pulled off and apart. The lower kingpin trunnions need to be replaced. The king pins look good. I'm going to order the bearings and seals tomorrow. Then off the the blaster to get cleaned up after a little more trimming.

Just a little more grinding to go.
I ordered my Detroit for my 14B tonight. Should be able to drop everything off next week to get installed. Then it's on to pulling my rear axle.

I figured out why the passenger side hub didn't want to turn.

Time to find a spindle and order some bearings and seals.
