Interesting on the cam....

I think the Holley was giving too much fuel... so that is why I am putting the Weber back on for the time being.. Donnie raced these engines for years and I am going by his recommondations. We were going to work on the Holley this week, but he is having health issues and I wanna drive it.. So in a nutshell why I am switching carbs..

If you can get info from someone who has raced these engines I wouldn't be worried to go by his recomendations for sure. As for carb tuning, a wideband with a digital a/f meter is a great tuning/diagnostic tool!

On the road again........

I put the stock intake and Weber back on and put the Crawler cam in.. It fired right up, I even had the timing dead on.... To many times swapping the distributor, I guess.

The only thing I can figure out on the Holley is that it may be running out off fuel.. Does anyone know how many gallons an hour the stock fuel pump puts out?

Me too, tired of working on the engine... The rear main seal appears to be leaking a little bit... hoping it will seal up as it runs a little.

Glad it's better. You've been working real hard on that machine.

The COOL factor....Really, I found the Offenhuaser intake and a worn out Holley on Craigslist cheap.. And I thought it would be cool, well the carb was shot so I bought a new one..

And more fuel and air makes more power... Or so I hope.

I can definitely tell the difference between this engine and the old one..
I decided to run it for a while before I put the D.U.I. distributor and carb back on..

Thanks Mark... I enjoy working on it, but not doing the same thing over and over... I want to get started on the cage and seats.. Maybe this weekend.

Does it have a new crankshaft or a remanufactured one?

If it is remanned then it could have a seal groove or could have been ground down smooth thus making the diameter smaller and the seal not as tight. Quick fix for that scenario would be a seal saver sleave. They are easy to install (if you consider dropping your tranny easy) and I've done it a few times on several motors including a 22R.

It is a complete "new" engine... I lubed the crank before I slid the seal on it.. so I'm not sure...

I have pulling the transmission / transfer case down to a science.. can have it on the ground in 30 minutes... I REALLY don't wanna pull it again.

Well the seal leaks when it wants to... Sometimes it doesn't...Weird, I know.

I took the truck out on some trails Saturday and it did really good.. I didn't push it hard though..

A few pictures of the trail..

And of my buddy's jeep...His right hub quit working, so he had to winch a lot and I had to pull him out a few times..

I felt bad, because I forgot my tool bag, and was unable to fix the hub..

So Sunday, I decided to redo the tool bag and got a box.

Then I had to figure out how to CRACKHEAD proof it.. So I made this out of some scraps I had laying around..

I know it won't stop a thief, but I do everything in my power to make them work for it....

Everything is locked down.... It cost me $16.50 for spare keys.. 8 locks

Your toolbox looks like a surgical tray.

I'm not worthy to be your friend.

I used the old tool bag to carry some other things... I saved all the hoses and belts off the old engine (less than a year old) and added some pieces of fuel line. I also put in some power steering fluid, brake fluid, rags and wipes..

I also put a light that can hook to the battery in the bag..

When I change the oil, I am going to get an extra filter and a jug of oil to carry.
Not sure whether to use conventional oil or synthetic yet.... Any input???

Congrats, you have officially earned your Toyota Eagle Scout badge! LOL

I have always used conventional oil in every vehicle I have owned with no problems. But I bought my wife a Camry a few years ago and use 0W-20 Mobile One Advanced Fuel Economy full synthetic oil that is specifically made for Toyotas. Toyota recommends changing the oil every 5,000 miles (and many say that you can go 15,000 on synthetic) but I still change the oil every 3,000 mainly because I have NEVER had a problem doing so and I'd rather not test the waters otherwise. I can only imagine what motor oil looks like after 15,000 miles... I think conventional/synthetic oil is a personal preference when it comes to trucks like ours. There are drawbacks of both types, but I wouldn't say that one will make your engine last longer or perform better. Rumor has it that you want to break in your engine with conventional oil to get your rings to seat properly, but I could always argue that BMW, Lexus, Mercedes and other higher end cars are shipped from the factory with synthetic so you have to ask yourself "what is it about a 22R that synthetic is a no-no for the break in period?" I know with motorcylces, additives in synthetic oils will cause the clutch fibers to deteriorate and slip so I never used it when racing motorcycles. But obviously that isn't a factor in our truck since the tranny and crankcase don't share lubricant.

Trail time and carnage..

Went out on the trails yesterday, a local trail known as Buzzards bluff.. It used to be a fun, scenic trail with some good obstacles.. Well some loggers messed up a good portion of it.. and they say 4 wheelers mess up the trails..
Some pictures..

And a few obstacles, It is hard to take pictures and wheel at the same time..

Not crazy about the mud... I grew up in Fla... all there was, was mud..lol

This was a fun ravine... Left rear tire tried to over take the right front for good PUCKER moment.

And my once "new" marker light..

I also pushed the snorkel in... The filter can (box) held up good, just rubbed a little paint off it..

All in all it was a good afternoon of wheeling and like my girlfriend said.. "Now you have something to fix." lol

Gmack, I'm having similar oil puke blow by. Tomorrow I will do a compression test. Just curious as to why your block was toast? Was it because you has it bored .40 already and can't bore it anymore or something else. I hope I didn't toast my block.
