Dropzone's 1981 Trekker Build-Up Thread

Not sure if I will go limb lifters or not
Rob, every time I see your truck, I get the notion to sing that old Manfred Man song: Blinded by the light. Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night...
But you know what I like most about your truck? The fact that it is never done! LOL You started this thread over 7 years ago and it's still going strong. I hope to have my truck "done" soon, but I have a feeling that I'll be constantly tweaking on it for years to come. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure how permissive my wife will be on that concept.

I see you guys Trekkers and wish I could of found one before building my runner. Now I have missed out on two of them since then. More rarer then a runner and just great looking trucks.
#1443
they are great trucks but like all the older trucks they have inherent quirks and bugs that have to be dealt with.
#1444
That would be great if it was the one you seen in Alaska. The odds are in your favor. I always like to find out the history on trucks. Sometimes they come from just down the road to all the way across country. You just never know.

I picked up a couple of cans of black plastidip just to see how it might work. Hopefully get the spare hood painted over the weekend.
Top and doors are also going back on too..Summer almost over
#1447
so doing the usual end of summer stuff like putting the full doors back on and getting the top ready to go on.
I was staring at my rear bumper, thinking I had bent it on a trail run banging it on something or tweeked it getting pulled out or something. Was going to pull it but than looking at the mounts found something else.
it looks bent down on the p/s or bent up on the d/s

passenger side rear mount is straight:

Driver side is bent down

will probably have to unbolt the cage so I can somehow bend this thing back up and throw some new pucks or something in there with some rubber cushions. 33 years have taken a toll.

The bolts don't look to rusted on yours. Looks like they will come right off. I usually wind up snapping a few bolts on the undercarriage. For 33 years, cant really complain as it is still in great shape.
#1450
Should be a quick repair and cheap.
I am pretty lucky with regard to the frame rust and bolts, the floor...that was a whole other issue.
I guess I should consider myself lucky, another trekker owner's rear body mounts were in much worse shape after a run on the Rubicon.

Seems like you guys have fairly mild winters. Winter is something I don't miss. I ever move again, that is something I want to take into consideration. Looks like you still have some great weather and hope it holds out for a while.
Those front tags are something I wish could go away. With the older trucks, Garmins are handy to have. I am always worried about them being a thief magnet.

Personally I love it. I was stationed in Alaska and upstate NY...real snow was great.
Funny thing about the Garmin, it has been traded for some stuff that will make gear selection easier

A friend and me was at the boneyards and found an 80 2 wheel drive. He collects the odd things from first gens and I found a cover that says Toyota that goes over the stereo area if it came from the factory for him. Neither of had ever seen anything like that. He has found a build sheet that is part English and part Japanese as well in the past. You ever seen a cover for the stereo? I don't have a picture of it but could get one. Just curious as to how rare that piece was.

Got a few things done today.
Project Extend-a-hatch is mounted. Not exactly perfect. I think I can adjust it slightly with the hinges.

the whole truck has that kind of lean to the left..
awhile ago i swapped out my roller fairlead for a hawse fairlead and didn't like the way i ended up with the license off to the driver's side

I don't know why I didn't think of this before, centered the license and counter sunk some cap bolts into the winch mount and tacked them into place...five minute job

is this what you are talking about. this is in a mostly original base model 81 2wd that I just bought.

Got a CBI Tire Carrier for christmas(again, had one 6 or 7 years ago) I think I may cut and angle it towards the hatch somewhat since it kind of sticks out a ways. This will be nice since I will be able to use it on a future truck too.

it has a mount for a high lift
one thing i like about this variation of the CBI mount is the reciever mount for a recovery point

Santa also brought a nice rolling tool cart (our christmas was delayed due to kids coming in from out of town late, well worth it

had some extra stickers

7' grinder will make cutting and other stuff easier

I had posted a pic of my GPS on another forum, Rory said he could use a bigger GPS. I said I'll trade you for a set of triple sticks and he said sure
I'll need to pull the cases to remove the interlock pin. I will also need to angle the levers back quite a bit, there should be enough adjustment on the two outer levers to do it with out modifying them. The stick for the front box will need to be cut, angled and welded. It has had times popped out of low when shifting from 3rd to 4th, might as well fix it when i do the install..

So many of you know I haven't been able to make up my mind on lighting.
A friend at work made an offer for both my light bars I couldn't really pass up so they are gone.
Though the outpUT of the roof mounted light bar was awesome I really didn't like the glare on the hood.
I picked up some knock off Vision X type 25w round lights. Incredible out put in a small package. Construction quality seems to be better than some of the other lights I have had.
I have 5, currently have 3 mounted, may go with 4 up front and 1 on the back.
Used a smittybilt Fairlead light mount

found some aluminum to make a triple mount

Ordered a Vision X filter to see if it would fit.
sure enough it does. I can order flood beam and other assorted filters for about $20 each. Which to me is a nice option for changing conditions.

The two smaller light pods on the bumper will probably become back up lights on the Dodge.
