Failed BFG KO

These photos were sent you me by a friend in Australia, his company SUV out on a service road had this tire come apart while doing a mild dirt/rocky road. Just thought I'd share the photos.

From the looks of the sidewall then looking at the tread, it looks like a recap??????

I believe it is not a recap, but i can ask to double check.

I have had the same problem with two of the bfg all terrain tires, i'm switching to goodyear wranglers mtr kevlar tires when i get the money.

Holy, glad no one was hurt. Try the goodyear duratracs for a light stock tire replacement. Seems to me that i Haven't heard of anyone complaining about build quality.

Here is a link to my duratracs having some fun in the same type of climate as Australia.

btw.. that is a stock 4runner and that hill measured out at just about 1.2 to 1 (40-45 degree's from horizontal) watch the tree's to see what I mean.

Not a cap and for a tire to go like that it almost always has to have been run low on air. Not a BFg at guy but. That's just standard of all tires.

the tear is right around where there would be a fold in the sidewall if the tire was run at too low of PSI for too long, so I would guess this also. same thing happens to street tires all the time. what's crazy though is the cut looks so clean that it looks like something could have sliced it - like a piece of body trim rubbing the tire in that spot.

From what my friend told me and what i see in the picture it looks as if the sidewall plys were bonded between two layers on the tread. The line around the edge marks the material overlap. I don't think it was a cut so much as the layers came apart.
Whether the tire was run low due to a leak i don't know, but the terrain was just a mild access road. The vehicle is a stock nissan patrol, turbo diesel, factory lockers, that was the factory tire it shipped on. They weren't aired down for a dort road in that vehicle.

Like i said, just sharing the photos and background info, I wasn't there, so I don't know what was happening the exact moment of failure.

More likely tire pressure too low for long period, fatiguing that line. Too little chance that BFG would allow quality to go that bad.

Good post to promote awareness of build quality and watching tire pressure carefully. Yeah, agree with the comment on body trim. Really looks like side-wall separated from rolling surface. A recap would only have the outer tread (cap) come off.

Never tried any BFG tire and I will not after seeing the pics.
