A BIG Yotatech welcome to ZOOKY and vwdieseljunkie!
You can be sure you both will be getting lots of requests for info on your projects. They both look like very nice clean installs...
Sorry to hear about your bad luck junkie I hope you're able to get back on the road soon...
If you feel up to it please start a thread of your own and share your knowledge, there is a member here who is/was doing a merc. diesel conversion himself...
Great to hear about your progress Flash nice pics!

Well, it was not toyota-related, but as general knowledge on the Merc diesels, that I can help with. There are pro's and con's to the merc diesels. I'll look for that thread and see if I can help.

Flash, which transmission are you using? my dialup isn't cooperating, so sorry if you've already posted it.

I am using a G58 (5 speed manual) out of the Toy. Any Toyota 4 cylinder trans will work.

Oh its doing pretty well. I like it better than Confederation college which I went to for Mechanical Engineering. The Alternative Energies course is really good. I can't wait to get to the biofuels part of the course and make myself a biodiesel processor.
I must say this project is coming along really nicely. I really want to see and hear the finished product running. Too bad diesel has gone through the roof. Here its the equivilant of $4.62/gal.

Okay I got it running. Took a bit of work (and a mouth full of diesel) as the pump and everything was full of air, but I got it finally. So here is the video. The turbo sounds nice but you can't hear it much on the video. I think the frequency must be to high for the camera to pick up.

Sounds Great!!
I found your thread this morning and haven't stopped reading!

Great Job with it and I look forward to hearing more. I'm very interested in this swap. I've wanted a diesel in my Toyota since before I bought the truck.

Good Luck and keep us posted
Grant

anybody know the mpg's of a 1.9 VW diesel into a shortbed standard cab pickup...my choice of engine swap is between the 1.9 and the 3.9cummins 4BT! (over 400lb ft of torque....wow..big numbers..lol)

Sounds great flash... I caught a little turbo whistle just as it spooled up but then the "clatter" drowns it out... looks pretty sweet... can't wait to hear how it performs in real world...

It won't be 400lbs unless you modify the 4BT or find some elusive special marine version. The most common factory 4BTs had power in the low 100s and torque in the mid to high 200s. Some were just over 300lbs. Still nothing to sneeze at when the average 16mpg V8 has the same and the pumps can be turned up. Just be aware that the "little" 4BT still weighs just a touch over 700lbs.

Now I am itching. Just the dreaded exhaust, bleed the clutch and some odds and ends. Where did you cross over the exhaust Zooky?

down, then under the transmission. If I was to do it again I would move the fuel tank to the other side then go down and strait back

My Toyota diesel came with a downpipe that goes down and under the tranny right in front of the tranny crossmember. I then ran it stright out the back end. It works nicely and sound very mean. I need to get a sound clip up of it sometime. Just haven't had time. Might get to it this weekend.

Well just an update.

I have the engine running good with no leaks so far. I got a cold air intake for a Honda civic that has a washable filter and it fits nice. I just have to build a support for it.

I bled the clutch and rocked the truck back and forth in gear and everything feels good. Cluch feels normal and engages nice. I don't have any brakes yet so I could not take it down the driveway or I would have.

I ordered an exhaust kit from e-bay that has a bunch of bends of 2" pipe, 90's 45's and stuff. I am going to try and fab up some kind of exhaust from that. I wanted to go bigger but it is tight under there. Maybe once I figure out the routing I will put some bigger stuff on.

The tach thing is really bugging me. If anyone has info on the stock tach wiring and signal type, fill me in. I have tryed pulsing a +12 signal to what I think is the tach wire but am getting no response.

Here is a link to my conversion pictures and how I routed my exhaust. Its a 3 inch straight pipe and I have the same problems with the wrong exhaust side as you do. Might give you an idea at least. It doesn't hit anything but I don't do heavy offroading anyways. But if it did its pipe so it wouldn't get hurt anyways.

Hey thanks for the pics. I see you are a fellow Toyota Truck fanatic like myself. That piping is what I was thinking of doing. Is that 2 inch at the start?

No off the turbo housing down to where it comes across the front of the crossmember is 3 inch. This is not a factory item to my knowledge as the person who imported it said it was not but it works nicely. The piece after the cross over pipe is either 2.25 or 2.5''. That will be replaced as soon as I get back up north for the summer. Then it will be a full 3 inch straight pipe all the way back.

And yes I'm definately a toyota fanatic. My friends call me a walking Toyota encyclopedia. I researched Toyota diesels and diesel swaps for about 6 months before I did my swap. Read online for around 2-3 hours a night average.

I forget if you mentioned what gears you are running and what RPMs you plan to run at. Right now with the 4.10s and 235s I'm running at about 2400 at 60mph. I'm swapping in some 3.90 gears to get that number down a bit though this summer hopefully. This motor has so much torque there is no need for low gearing. By the way this A343F auto seems to be a very good tranny. Its got 300000kms on it and it does not give any problems. Can't say the same for the A340H. Along with gears for mileage I'm wiring in a torque convertor lockup switch so I can run with it locked when running at under 80km/h. Should help with mileage.

Ya I think my RPMs will be high. I have 4:10's and 31" tires. But the VW diesel was designed with higher revs in mind so it will take it. Guys on the VW sites run T3 turbos with 20+ psi boost and hit well over 4500 rpm. I was thinking of trying to modify a Saturn Overdrive (made for jeeps) to drop my RPM's. The VW torque band is 2500-3000.
