PowerstrokeJoe's om617 Turbo Diesel swap/build in 1990 P/up

Its been forever since I have updated this. The truck is still running strong. I broke the wastegate hose on the way to school a few weeks and saw 18lbs of boost. It made some power haha. So far so good.

Thanks Aviator!
Well Its been a week or two but I made it out to KC to Meed PyroJoe! We had a great time. I didn't get a chance to get pictures of the two trucks, but we will have to do that next time. My alternator packed(and caught fire) up on the trip back and I had to tow it home, but it was under warranty and its all up and running now. It just keeps going.

The alt. caught fire?! Ouch... hope it did'nt do too much damage under the hood...
the truck should have been able to run without the alt. though once it got started...
I threw an alt belt on a 24' GM 7500 w/Cat and it ran ok... no gauges worked but I got home... fig. about 5hrs driving in light rain that way... lucky it was day time... the batt. would have died a lot sooner if' I'd had to run the lights too...

Yeah I think it was just the varnish on the stator windings burning off. It Just burnt my air filter nothing really was hurt. I actually had unhooked it about 1/4 mile before it caught fire. I figured on running on home without it but I guess it had already gotten hot enough to take out the bearings in it. Unfortunately that belt drives the water pump so I couldn't go without it.

Thanks it a work in progress!
Well not much to report on the truck, its running fantastic. I've had a few PM's asking about how loud the truck is so I made a quick video comparing my trucks. So here it is next to my 08 Ford 6.4 and my 01 Dodge 24 valve.

Well its been forever since I posted anything. My Grandpa had been batting heart failure for the past month or so and ended up passing away, so everything has been on hold for a good bit. My truck is still hanging in there. I am strongly considering pulling it off the road this summer and going over it with a fine tooth comb. I have been working all winter/spring on building a 5.9 Cummins for my Dodge so it will probably become the DD for a while. Building the Cummins really inspired to see what kind of power this engine can make. I talked to a someone at ARP and they seemed to think that they could get a head stud kit for it. The only weak link I see then is the factory connecting rods, but I think I'm careful with the timing I should be able to see fairly high boost and fuel without excessive in cylinder pressures. I'm kind of curious to see if Bosch has any larger elements that fit the pump. I know they used one similar to it on some larger industrial engines back in the early 90's. Time will tell but I really want to make this thing run.

I am sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing. Was this the same grandfather that I believe you worked in the shop with during your build??
I have a 91 & 92 4cyl reg cab Toyotas' and I have studied your build very close and have since purchased a 1984 Mercedes 300D or TD.. not sure but it has the 617 turbo engine in it. I have also purchased a 1979 non EGR valve exaust manifold for it with the much larger rear plenum for the rear 2 cylinders and no EGR that needs blocked off. I do not plan on doing the swap soon but collecting the parts for when I do

Now now guys no need to get that way with each other...
Joe so sorry to hear about your Grandpa passing, lost mine 25 yrs ago and I still miss him... we were so similar in habits and ideas... no surprise I guess since he guided a lot of them lol...
on the con-rod issue could you not take them to a machine shop and get some CNC'd out of a stronger grade of metal to the same design? IK this would be pricey...

Thanks guys for your words about Pop. He was a huge part of this truck and my life. He is greatly missed. Yep Scruffy that was him.
Aviator- I am going to do some checking. I have a feeling it would melt a wallet.
I guess I should clarify what I meant about the timing vs boost. Timing on a diesel can do an insane amount of damage really fast without much warning. With the boost numbers that these engines see I feel that boost and fuel flow are the safer things to try and change first. I have my timing advanced a little bit and it is right at the comfort range I want to run egt wise. I can see 1200 on a really hot day pulling a long hill. Thats about as hot as I care to run an engine sustained. Generally speaking on a diesel as your timing goes up your boost will go down due to the longer flame front pushing the piston. This is also why the egt's will decrease but cylinder pressure and drive pressure will increase. Bottom line the way I see it with the 617, timing will kill it way before boost will. Thats just my opinion on it.
Life around here has been pretty busy as of late. We got a pretty decent amount of snow a few weeks ago. I managed to bury my poor yota in the front yard pretty bad.
What that picture doesn't show is its high centered on a drift. It was floorboard deep on the other side. The shop has been pretty busy and I actually got another Yota in for a rear end rebuild.
I'd love to get ahold of that one. There aren't that many of these trucks around here . It was nice to get to work on another one. I just finished building the engine for my current diesel swap/project.
I'm hoping to have that finished up this week or next so I can take the yota off the road for a bit and do some much needed TLC. I think I am going to play with the pump a bit and I need to re do my radiator mount setup as I am not happy with it. I still need to give Brian a call. I went and talked to a few guys that are big into injection pumps and the like and they all reciprocated the same information on the pump stating that it flows almost max fuel in stock form. The most power gain from fuel alone would be 10-15 hp. There is a Deutz industrial engine that is a 5-cyl that uses the M pump as well and uses larger elements. The only thing I am un sure on that is the governor as it is an industrial engine. Deutz parts are rare and hard as heck to find anymore either. If I can get my hands on one I'm going to see what I can do with it. I am debating about pulling the motor out of my Benz to use as a mule. The Benz has developed some really serious rust issues and really isn't very safe to drive without some major work. Thats only as time frees up. To be honest I am not at all unhappy with the power my truck has. Yes its slow, but it will run 75 down the highway with no trouble at all and hold speed on the hills. I am just curious as to what this thing can do. I'll be sure to keep you all posted.

Aviator, it looks like a Ram Off Road grill guard: http://www.aztrucks.com/product.asp?pr=Safari_Guards
*My 2nd choice if I can't find one of the old Warn Combo kits...

I'm next to positive it was a Ram. Its been a month or so since it was here. Its an awesome little truck.
Well the Yota got to hitch a ride home on the trailer this afternoon. My radiator decided it was time to kick the bucket and boy did it ever let go. It appears I am on the look out for a new ride. I think I am going to ditch the Merc radiator and puke tank in favor of an aluminum one. I'll be sure to bring a camera along.

and you call yerself a farmboy... all ya needed to do was stick a trough in your bed, fill her with water and [with extensions] stick the inlet and outlet rad hoses in it... you coulda gone fer miles before she boiled over all the way... you gotta think outside a da barn boy...
you put the inlet hose at one end and the outlet at the other and by the time the rad juice has got to the other end shes cold and ready for another dance...
if you don't got no trough use a 50 gal. drum you must have one a them lying around...
