Live4soccer7's 84runner 1UZ Swap

I think you can all deduce what is happening with the following pictures sequence.

Sold the 22r and freshly rebuilt w56 last sunday, picked up the LS400 Friday, working on pulling the motor today for the 1UZ swap. It is a 91, so I have the early strong motor. The LS400 drives well and has plenty of power. I can always slap a small turbo or supercharger on the stock internals down the road too if I feel the need for more HP.

The motor runs SO smooth. It will be adapted with an R150 transmission. I'm working on acquiring the bellhousing now except KSracing (ebay) has just pulled the bellhousing that mates the two, so I'm hoping he gets it back up soon because that is the best option out there from what i've read. I will be going with other components for the flywheel, clutch, etc...

Here it is pulled. Took me about 11-14 hours to carefully pull the engine and tranny without destroying any wiring and unplugging it all.

The combo came out nicely with a load leveler, fans removed, radiator removed, ac condenser removed etc...

A couple bell housing pictures. KSracing bell housing from Ebay. I have read and heard from many people that have done a bunch of these swaps that this is what they like best. So, I trusted them and went for it.

Some information I have compiled with the KSbellhousing setup:

Shave 35mm off the slave cylinder mount point
stock clutchfork and pivot (stock, I would assume the R150F stock ones)
extreme performance flywheel (working on finding this flywheel)
80 series cruiser clutch disc and release bearing

They were designed for use in drift racing so they should be plenty strong. I bought one last year while gathering parts for my next 1uz swap.

Nice to see you drop in toyminator2000. Would you recommend anything different than the info I have listed below for the R150/1UZ adaption/clutch setup?

Early Model R150F Transmission (from 3vz series engine, with shorter shaft)
KSRacing Bell housing off of ebay (other bell housings may require the later r150f)
The marlin adapter kit for the later model R150F transmission: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfe...v6-drivetrains
Also with the marlin adapter (unless using the chain driven tcase that bolts to the R150F, you will need this to match the spline counts):http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfe...ine-input-gear
3.0 Slave Cylinder and Clutch Fork
Will have to shave/cut some off the slave cylinder mounts point on the KSracing bell housing
Either Modified 3vz Flywheel (bolt pattern and shaved to engage starter) or pre-modified flywheel that will accept 3vz clutch setups. 5/16" off back flywheel. Use spacer for re-drilling holes
About 1/2" worth of spacers on the ball for the fork
3.4 Throwout Bearing
Marlin Crawler Super clutch for the 3.0 (3vz)

No not really. The 3.4 throw out bearing I haven't heard about. not sure how much different it is from the 3.0. A am also planning on using the turbo R151 transmission because I have access to them and want the gear transfer case.

I believe 85toyman uses the 3.4 bearing. I'm not sure of the differences either.

Can you provide me with an R151F? Pretty please! lol. I will be using the gear transfer cases as well, but would have to use an adapter from marlin (other other vendor) for the R150F. Would you be willing to ship one?

I can't find a single thing down here for the R151F and hardly anything at all on the R150F.

Great start to your build. Yes you will need the 3.4 throw out bearing. If you use the 3.0 you will be tearing the tranny back down and replacing it. Ask me how I know. Not to many people have 5 spds behind there 1UZ engines. I was one of the crazy people who decided I had to be different, and I am so happy I did.

I also have a r150f behind a 1uzfe and used the 3.0 throwout bearing along with Marlin HD clutch kit. All seems to be working fine and has been for over 3000 miles. What happened with yours that you had to replace it with a 3.4? Should i be watching for something? I used a ks bell and a 3.0 fly wheel

Hmm, interesting. So I used a 1994 LS400 engine. I bolted it up with the KS racing bell housing to the R150F tranny that came in my 1994 4runner. I installed the 3.0 clutch set. I used 3 washers behind the pivot fork and mated it all together. I took it for a drive and the thing was slipping really bad and I couldn't change gears when it was running. The throw of the clutch was off as well for the opening in the bell for the fork.

I tore it all apart and check the depth and the and found that the 3.0 throw out bearing was not making contact with the pressure plate fingers. I checked the depth of the collor and found that the 3.4 collor lengh is the difference in space and it allowed me to remove the spacers behind the pivot fork. I assume that there could be differences in tolerances on the bell housing, but this is what worked great for me. I guess it sounds like you might try the 3.0 throw out and if it dosen't work you know you'll need the 3.4 bearing.

It is insane how much you learn about your rig when you are the one building it. Lol. I love my Zrunner

It has already been such a great learning experience thus far. Can't wait to start getting the engine in and working through all that. I'm sure I will learn TONS more. Thanks for the information on the throwout bearings!

Zrunner - I like it!

Oh so that's the difference, depth. Yeah I had to space my pivot a lot farther than 3 washers. It is amazing how much more sense all of this makes once you start working on it

LOL. I'm working on a setup using a chromoly flywheel from here: http://www.xtremeclutch.com.au/en/

I have emailed them regarding it. It utilizes the stock 1UZ flywheel bolts as well and the clutch setup is FZJ80 10 inch Landcruiser clutch disc and also release bearing for the same vehicle with an R32 Skyline pressure plate

Clutch fork: Stock Hilux/4runner as with the pivot ball (fit a 2mm spacer)

35mm off of the KS bells slave pedestool and use a stock V6 4runner clutch slave cyl (also the Hilux/4runner rubber boot is used for the clutch fork)

There should be plenty of holding power with the larger clutch setup. Finding the parts and getting a hold of that company will be another story. It sounds like a really solid setup.

Let me know your thought anyone.

In my spare moments, I have been looking at brake upgrades for the 84 4runner too. One of the things is upgrading to a dual diaphragm brake booster (BB). What kind of fitment did you guys come across against the BB when throwing the 1UZ in your trucks? I know there are a couple different sizes of the dual diaphragm BBs out there and wasn't sure if I really needed to hunt down the smaller diameter one next time I'm at the yard or if I can just snag one of the larger ones (much easier to find).

Mine has never been a problem but it's an 89. The most popular upgrade is to use an FJ80 landcruiser master cylinder, rear disc conversion and put FJ40 rotors and mini IFS calipers on the front.
