What is this piece on the side of the block?

Anybody know what this is for? I'm finally ready to install my JDM 3.4 and I have no idea what the purpose of this piece is. Should it have a hose going to it? Should plug it? Leave it alone? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Sorry, guess a bit of delay. I don't know what thats for. The brass plug above it is a drain plug; behind it is the water jacket. My domestic does not have anything where that drain tube thing is. Mine has just a hole that opens if that plug is backed out. I guess your's is some sort of diverter drain tube?

Interesting. I even had to trim my motor mount to clear it. I'll just have to keep an eye on it when I get around to starting the engine. If nothing comes out it'll stay as is. Maybe it's just so you can install a hose to drain the block easier...

If I remember correctly from my 3.4 swap, that is the engine block coolant drain tube. You loosen the brass bolt above it and coolant drains out of the little tube. You can connect a length of hose to it so coolant doesn't splash around everywhere.

Perfect thanks. After coopster's answer that was my assumption, but it's nice to have assurance.
