I'm swapping a 3.4 into my 1995 5 Speed (Manual) 4Runner to replace the blown 200,000 mile + 3.0 engine it had in it.

The 3.4 engine I'm using is out of a 1997 5 speed 4Runner and has around 80,000 miles on it.

I will not be using any parts from Off-road Solution. They offer quality parts to people that don't have the time or want to find the stuff are the parts store. I'm a cheap bastard and have a AutoZone within walking distance of my house so I'll be using parts you can find from there.

My plan is to try and document this swap for other people out there that are interested in doing this on a budget. I'll try and keep a total cost break down and a parts used list for you guys.

I plan to do the wiring myself. Splicing wires using 2 Toyota wiring manuals is not that hard and will save a lot of $$$.

Motor is in the truck and bolted to the transmission.

Yeah it should be a lot of fun. Best of both worlds when you do a 3.4 swap.

I've never been much of a 3rd Gen fan. I'm a pure 2nd Gen fan at heart. Plus my 2nd Gens say "Made in Japan". The way I like it.

Got some more work done today. Cleaned the engine bay and got all the 3.0 stuff out, plus I got the 3.0 wiring harness out.

It was a pain to get the blower and ac stuff out so I could work with the wiring harness easier.

Houston I think we have a problem. The 3.4 wiring harness I have is out of a 97 5 speed 4Runner.


This is a 3.4 ECU for a 3.4 5 Speed out of a different truck. The plugs don't match.


From what I've found there are 2 types of wiring harness's for 3.4 motors. There is a 5 Speed (Manual) and an Automatic on. I've now found out that I have a Automatic Wiring Harness and a Manual ECU.

I've been doing a lot of research today.

1. There are TWO types of plugs for the 3.4. There are Manual plugs and there are Auto plugs. Here's a picture showing the difference.

Manuel Plugs on top. Automatic Plugs on bottom.


My problem now is I have an Automatic wiring harness and need to figure out how to make my Manual ECU work with it.

2. Some people might have heard the rumor that Automatic equipped 3.4 vehicles do not have the pilot bearing hole in the crank shaft. I have a 14 year veteran (Master) Toyota mechanic friend that says 100% that rumor is FALSE. He says it would be stupid for Toyota to have 2 different cranks made. That is not how Toyota does things.

But the crank is not your problem if you want to use a Manual Transmission behind an Automatic 3.4. You either have to swap wiring harness's or plugs.

I'm definitely interested in seeing if I can do this swap without spending $1500 on parts from a kit.

I'm bolting this motor to a 5 Speed (Manual) Transmission. The 3.4 I have is from an Automatic 4Runner from what I've found out. The salvage yard said it was from a 5 Speed 4Runner.

What does the Auto ECU look for that the 5spd ECU doesn't? I am assuming certain inputs from the auto transmission, and then a return path to the tranny with instructions.

Is it possible to figure out which wires are "talking" to the auto tranny and just eliminate them? If so, couldn't an auto ECU work on a 5spd equipped truck?

I know I am simplifying things a great deal, but seems like such a thing could be possible. Unless the auto ECU uses tranny info to dictate engine management.

I am finding a lot more auto 3.4's in my search for a donor, so if I could use one in my 5spd I'd have lot's of purchase options.

I'm still doing reaseach to figure out my best route now but as of right now I see 2 options maybe 3.

1. Get a wiring harness out of a 5 Speed (manual) equipped vehicle and use it.

2. The plugs on the old 3.0 wiring harness will plug into the 3.4 5 Speed (manual) ECU so I'm thinking about replacing the plugs on the 3.4 Automatic wiring harness with my old 3.0 wiring harness plugs. I'd sill need to buy one plug, I think it's a 12 wire plug that the 3.4 ECU needs but the 3.0 wiring harness doesn't have.

3. Buy a 3.4 Automatic ECU and jump the neutral wires so the ECU thinks the vehicle is always in neutral.

I've done an Automatic to Manuel swap on my other 1995 4Runner and jumped the neutral wires. The motor didn't seem to run right so I purchased a 3.0 5 Speed ECU and used that. The motor did seem to run better.

My thought is that maybe the ECU needs information from the Automatic to make fuel judgment calls. But then again I have read some people using Automatic ECU with no problems at all.

I'm planning to use option 1.

Been working on the swap. Got all my 3.0 body wires identified and labeled. 10 wires from the body is all I found that I needed. I'll post pictures and more information latter.

Does anyone know if there is a way to identify what year a 3.4 is and it's wiring harness.

I was told I purchased a 3.4 and wiring harness out of a 1997 Manual 4Runner but have sense found the wiring harness is not a Manual one and is an Automatic.

My problem is I can not find a FSM that matches my wiring harness. I've went through just about every FSM on techinfo.toyota.com

I've called a couple of Toyota Dealers and they all say there's no way to identify a motor or wiring harness. Is there not a VIN # on the motor somewhere?

I have everything finished for my 3.4 swap but the wiring, as soon as I figure out how to get past this I can drive my new beast.

FYI GUYS: MAKE SURE YOU GET A MOTOR AND WIRING HARNESS FROM A VEHICLE THAT YOU CAN GET THE VIN FOR OR AT LEAST VERIFY THE YEAR AND MAKE.

I'm having major issues finding what motor and wiring harness I have. I'm probably going to end up pulling the motor back out and making a custom wiring harness.
