Truck runs great. Manual would surely give it a little more giddy up.
honestly I didnt think that the wiring was all that bad. There were a few times that I wanted to beat my head against a wall, but overall not that bad.
I spent an extremely long time planning, reading, planning reading more, laying everything out so I think that all paid off.
thanks for the compliments. If you take it on, your welcome by anytime!
by any chance, just incase i do go for the 3.4 swap, Im not too good with wiring. How much would you charge just to do the wiring.? hehe....i just hate all that PITA wires tangling. I just called around to see how much a rebuilt or getting the 3VZE for, but after all that money spent i would definitely be happier with the 3.4 but barring would suck with the cat problem.
hey I would never take any money to take that on. I wouldnt want to marry it. Id be happy to steer you in case you get stuck, and offer any help I can but I am so busy usually that I couldnt take on the whole project.
i appriciate your confidence but I am not qualified either.
Ok so its been a while but its time to move onto stage 2 of (hopefully) 2 to make this thing right finally. When we left off, I installed the automatic with the stock Runner transfer case hanging off to the wrong side. That got me my BAR sticker, but now we want to go back to 5 speed. I have been gathering parts for the last few months and finally have just about everything, so its time to get working again.
The final goal for this is to have a 5 speed and dual cases.......and all smog legal. We'll see on that. Maybe stage 3.
Here is my old, stock 92 R150 with the case still on it.
My "new" 5 speed from a Tacoma that I bought from "Just Call Me Smithy" here on the 3.4 swap forum. Drove over by Pasadena to get it. Good guy and a he has a really cool Runner. Long day....about 9 hours round trip.
My cases that I have been gathering. On the left is a full case with Marlin 4.7 gears. On the right is a stock 2.8 case that will become the front box. Gotta figure out how to do that first. We also have the Marlin MC07 sitting here in a box brand new. Kind of hoping that he has his new adapter out before I am ready to install so i can get that instead.
Anyway, pulling the auto tranny without a tranny jack is always fun. It came out very easy. In fact, it just about fell out. We wrestled it out with a couple of floorjacks, a piece of wood, and a few cuss words. Redneck heaven here.
And here we are again. have missed you old friend. NOT!
We bought this flywheel from Kragen Auto and I have been shaky on using but I couldn't find a cheap Toyota flywheel so I was thinking I would give it a try. Literally as we were working on it I get a call from Just Call Me Smithy asking if I want to buy the flywheel from this tranny that I bought from him. He is going to send it to me so that will put me back a few days, but I'll sleep better knowing a 7 year old Chinese kid didn't make my flywheel that spins at 5000 RPM 3ft. from us. He says he just got it turned but I'll run it over to Marlin and have him check it out and see if he can add some step to it.
That put us at a standstill for the day underneath but there is still the clutch master, and repinning the ECM. I will be using Mosk22's AWESOME ECM configuration diagram. Jeff is a good guy and has helped me a lot with this as far as getting a hold of diagrams and visually lining up the conversion diagram.
Not a lot of room for the master anymore. I didn't plan on using it again so i didn't plan for it when I install the EVAP box.
Gonna be CLOSE!!!
Got it installed. I think that the EVAP will go on without moving it but I can slide it over if I have to.
Got the clutch pedal back in.
I think that I need a new speaker
that's about it for today. The sun drops on the garage about 5:00 and it goes from damn hot to Africa hot then. I did start to bend some line for the master to the slave. I hate doing that so I think that I am going to run a stainless flex line. Anyone have an opinion on how that will effect pedal feel compared to the stock hard to soft back to hard again?
Your truck was a 5-speed to begin with wasn't it? If not let me know I have all of the manual components pedal assembly, clutch master, slave, etc. that I just parted out of a T-100, (I'm assuming all this stuff would be the same) That is if you don't have it all yet.
Damn i wish I knew that. I was looking for a flywheel, slave, and the lines for a while but just bought them new. Other than the lines, I have everything now. I am trying to keep my original 3.0 lines unmolested in case I am back to the old tranny if this doesnt work out.
I think that stainless flex line is the easiest way to do this. There is a ton of crap to bend lines around. Let alone secure it.

Wow, just read the whole thread (OK, maybe I skimmed a bit in the middle), but DAMN, nice thread, dntsdad Very well documented. Puts my little tranny swap and 4wd conversion project in perspective.
Glad you found a real flywheel for your 3.4 -- the thought of a 20lb hunk of metal with the integrity of a dinner plate spinning at 5k rpm next to my feet would definitely cut into my enjoyment of the tranny swap.
Sounds like you have momentum! I think you're going to get yours back on the road before I get mine there.
Hey guys, have a question. In my box of clutch stuff from the original teardown I came across this spring. I have no idea where it went, or if it even was a part of the clutch system. Maybe it just ended up in there.
Anyone recognize it and know where it may go? It's about 10-12" long.

If I'm not mistaken it's for the brake leaver. Like a return spring.
EDIT: I just ran out and looked for you. It's for the brake.
Thanks but I have the spring on the brake pedal. That's not it. This look much too large to be a pedal spring. Can someone go out and see if there is another spring on the clutch pedal other than the coiled up spring.
You can see my brake pedal spring here.
On the pins of both pedals there is the groove for a possible spring. There is one on the brake, but I dont have anything for the clutch. I can add one I guess.
Here is another shot of the spring with no home. Notice how big the hook end is. Much too large for the pedal pin. Don't know what's up with the pic but my thumb looks an inch long. I am thinking that its unrelated to the clutch but it had to have come off this truck somewhere.
Just ran out and looked at my '88 5-speed. I don't see anything else other than the main large spring on the clutch. I remember a spring just like that from when I just stripped that T-100, but I think it was the brake one.
ok so is it worth swapping to a 3.4?? caz here is the deal i have a 93 kup 5 speed 4wd 3.0 my uncle just tottaled his 96 tacoma 3.4 no damage to the front at all.. his is also 5 speed 4wd should be easier that way right? how long would it take if i stayed on it non stop could i finish the swap?
