I don't think I've heard of anyone that has a 3.4l swap with S/C, URD, WI, 2.1" pulley, Taurus Fan, and a 3.0l radiator along with a TJM The 3.4L radiator in the 3rd gens is bigger, perhaps not as much of it is blocked by an ARB or TJM?

Good point, it is a much wider one-core radiator. The 3.0 is a compact 3 core.

oh, so you have the stock 3.0 radiator on a 3.4L engine?

that's more than likely your issue. i don't think you have enough cooling capacity. couple that w/ an air bubble or two and you'd really have some weird stuff going on - which would be similar to what you're seeing.

have you tried to fit a 3.4L radiator in there? you should PM adrian (flygtstein) and see if he would chime in. he has a 3.4L in his wnd gen.

I think it will be possible to get the 3.0l radiator to work, we just need to get more flow through it on the highway, as most of it is blocked by the TJM.

Adrian had his swap done by ORS and Mike @ ORS uses the stock 3.0 radiators. I've never heard of anyone fitting the larger 3.4 radiator in the older truck. I'm sure anything is possible but at what compromise?

As some have mentioned though the cooling capacity of the two is about the same (I'm just taking their word for it). It's just one is a wide 1-core and one is a compact 3-core.

I got a dozen of those flaps ordered from SPAL, I'm also going to open up the grill some to get more natural flow through on the highway. And try bleeding it better.

ahhh, then if he's using the 3.0 radiator, then you should be able to as well unless the SC is throwing out so much heat that it can't take it. the SC will put quite a bit of heat out under the hood in addition to the engine cooling that's needed.

...not to mention what's added by the dual auto-transmission coolers.

They mount the radiators and even the intercoolers at an angle in the front, a V is how they do it most often, but since you don't have an intercooler on that thing...if you were to angle the radiator, could you get it a lttle higher, clear some more of it above the TJM? Could probably get a little more airflow that way, but I know your running low on spare room in the front end...so just an idea... let me know.

So there was just no way to fab, or fit in an angled rad? Just thought it might be possible to angle back a bit, to get it in a higher position, and get more of the surface area accesible to air flow through the grill, instead of behind the TJM. Oh well....
Hope you get this worked out, we'll see what bleeding and the SPAL Flaps do for you...

Thanks Chris but I can't really picture that. The top of the rad is close to hitting the hood as it is, there is only 1/4" clearance to move it back without hitting the drive pulleys. Maybe some pics of what you're thinking? There are always ways to do something but at what cost and compromise, I'm looking for the simple & cheap first. But if I have to do something harder I'll keep that in mind.

Those flaps are a very cool idea, I wouldn't have thought of anything like that. If the shroud is limiting flow, those should fix the problem.

Unfortunately, I am unconvinced that the shroud is the limiting factor here... Man I wish I didn't have to wait for you to get the flaps Get 'em overnighted! j/k

Its so much easier to think when your looking and poking at it... but your soooo far away. I'll see if I cant dig up some pics of an angle mounted rad. But if your that short on room, then I dont see it being a very viable option...
Cheap and Simple is always what to try first...to bad it usually ends up being exspensive and complicated. lol. Good luck man.

EDIT: From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_mounted_intercooler

Most VMIC setups place the radiator below the intercooler, at a great angle, tilted back until it is almost touching the motor. Ducts are used in the front of the car to duct air through the intercooler, creating a ram-air effect, while the remainder of the air flows over the radiator, normally.
Granted, no IC here, but maybe that article could help you get the idea.. I couldnt really find any decent pics of a nice setup.

Another idea though... is there anywhere else that you could mount your tranny coolers? I mean with that pair in there, that has to limit some flow, and add some heat in front of the rad, right? Is there anyway, you could move them, say down behind the TJM and do louvers in it? like on either side of the winch, or even way out on the corners, but you dont want to add to much line in there because of pressure drop... But thats another idea, or if your not keen on slicing into that TJM ($$$) is there anywhere else you could put them? maybe with thier own fan(s), pusher or puller, depending on where they ended up and how you wanted the airflow to go... Again, just tossing ideas out there.

I used to just have one cooler and it was here:

I still have that cooler there but I'm running power steering ATF through it now.

Actually I'm mildly considering removing one of the 2 coolers because my trans temps are very low (about 160 coming out of the transmission before going through the coolers). I really thought the transmission would put out more heat but so far it hasn't even when doing some WOT tests. I guess the valve body mod works good huh. Always nice to have pleasant suprises too. :beach:

Always a nice surprise. I wonder how much flow you'll get if you do move those coolers, or take them off the system entirely...hehm...Keep me updated. AND if you get ready to let the coolers go, let me know....

Did the custom grill work:

Which included this air foil (made from my old Lund bug shield) to funnel air that would have gone over the hood into the front of the grill:

The grill itself is made from a fireplace screen I found at the hardware store for $20 and cut up:

I also made some wind deflectors for the sides to funnel the air into the radiator:

I got the little flaps to put on the fan shroud but haven't done that yet, these are calling my interest more right now:

Looks sweet, aside from the Toyota symbol bieng upside down

mmm.... sliders..... do you have to make the attachment tubing yourself? I have never seen sliders without the mounting legs??

The sliders are Trail Gear and they come with weld on yourself legs:

I wanted them like that so I could set the angle and extension myself and also it lets me decide were to place the bracket supports. The price was the best part, $160 including shipping (Allpro wanted $100 for shipping alone).

Kudos to the scope and professionalism of your project, yet again, Mt. Goat! You are going to have an incredible ride at the end of this project!

It may be just as well that I don't have the garage space, myself. I could EASILY see myself getting way deeper into my truck, if I didn't have the weather to contend with!

I hope we have a chance to see each other's trucks sometime, when we get them done! (are they ever really done?!?!?! ;-)

Did the grill mods make any difference on the highway temps?

Thanks, I'm sure we will be going through Summit Co sometime. Maybe for the Yotatech 2007 CO4RJ.

Man this site is really running slow today, I guess I better contribute some money for servers.
