Well I made some progress and got the "Evap" monitor tripped but had no luck with the "Cat" monitor. I jacked my 4Runner up on jack stands and followed the procedures in the Toyota FSM. Half way through the Easy OBDII program "Timed out." I kept running it until the timer ran out at the 7 minute mark. I am not sure if the program timing out had any affect on it but it did not work. Any thoughts? Should I just keep trying?

I've had time where I did the patterns over and over and over exactly like the bullitin said to and it never ran.
Is this something that you can just drive around regularly? That what I did and checked it a few days to a week later and it had ran. Not sure why honestly.

Since you guys have 3.4 swaps like me I have a side question for you. Recently I did head gaskets on my 3.4 engine and I found a vacuum "T" that looked like it was missing a hose. I have looked everywhere and cannot find a random vacuum hose laying around. For now I put a yellow cap on it. Can you guys look at my pics and let me know where this cap line should go to?

Got a question for all of you. I'm swapping an 01 AT 4x4 4runner 3.4 to a 95 MT 4x4 4runner. I need an ecu that will work with that swap wondering if anyone knew if the 01 or 02 tacoma ecu will work and how to treat the rear mounted evap by the gas tank. Thanks in advance.

Ive got a 90 runner with a 2000 3.4 in it, I'm from california, trying to figure out the smog and ref situation. i was wondering if anyone knew where the cat/ o2 sensors are supposed to be located, distance from each other and all. Also it was my understanding that 2001 motor had 2 cats, but now I'm hearing that maybe the 99 on up motors in california had 2 cats is this correct? I'm confused. Any help would be great thanks!!

Post-'99 has two cats and run an A/F sensor in the front. I put a 2000 engine in my truck with a '98 4Runner ECU. I left the front pipe and flange in place and I swapped it to the drivers side with the front o2 at the factory location. I ran my pipe back to a CARB approved cat in the truck's original location with the post-cat sensor within 6" of the outlet. I had no issues passing the BAR inspection. What helped me was the fact that I made it look as close to factory appearance-wise. Even the BAR ref complemented me and said "I had a hard time even telling that this was a swap".
Make it look good and they wont hassle you as much. In my case I was in and out in about 40 minutes.
Good luck.

Sounds like you did a nice job! Would you happen to have any pictures of your finished product? That would be awesome! So the distance from the first o2 sensor and the cat doesn't matter as long as it's factory location coming from the down pipe? But the o2 sensor beyond the cat needs to be within 6inches correct? My brother is a fantastic welder maybe I'll have him button everything together. Thanks for the help appreciate it! Here's a pic of the crossover my brother helped me build.

The vehicle gets inspected/smogged by the year and make of the ECU regardless of the vehicle. Whatever ECU you use in your swap determines what associated equipment you have to use. In my case I had a 1998 4Runner ECU so I used one cat, and it had no EGR.

So my understanding is 99 4Runner with Cali emissions the downpipe is the 1 pipe flange instead of 2 pipes joining to 1 and it had 2 cats I have a 99 ECU fed and my crossover pipe is the double piped flange. Wondering if this is going to screw me if I just did the double piped flange and ran 1 California legal cat. This smog stuff in California sucks

Glad to see this thread has helped some people out over the last few years. FYI my 3.4 is still running strong and I haven't had any problems with California smog since I got it to pass the referee inspection back in early 2014.
I am going to go back through my records as soon as I get home next week and will post any information that isn't included in this thread, including catalytic converter part numbers, 02 sensor distances, etc.
Happy Thanksgiving!
