Took my 4Runner to get the 6-month chasis-lubing and rear-brake adjustments done, and to my dismay I fall victim to the somewhat well-known "do you know your rear axle seal is leaking all over your brake shoes?" problem.

So I have to take it in tomorrow to have them replace it. That's $350 (approx. $220 USD) I didn't want to spend...

Anyhow, for those of you who might have questions as to what caused it, I have no idea. I have no rear diff breather, diff plug is not clogged. I got the rear suspension TSB done & other than Bilstein shocks, it's all stock back there.

Apparently this is quite common on Chevy's as well, from what I hear. How many of you have had this done/fixed?

 

I've said this several times in several threads, but have them inspect your axle shaft to see if its not bent. Mine was. I had 3 seals replaced before they figured out it was the axle shaft.

 

Thx Adam. Axle seems to be in good shape. The one inner boot that leaked had been replaced before and whoever did it, jammed it in there and did a shabby job, which is probably why it leaked this time.

The guy's who replaced it told me the above and feel that it should have no further problems, because they did it right this time.

We'll see in another 6 months I guess (fingers are crossed).

 

I feel your pain man!! I just had my axle seals replaced on wed 10/23.... I HOPE this is the last time!!

 

Wonder if Toyota will ever release a TSB for this? It's obviously a problem.
