rough shifting

my 93 yota shifts rough. is there a better gear oil to use that might help it or some other thing that might help it out? does slick 50 or lucas or any other type of oil like that work or not.

Moved to maintenance...

Check your shifter's bushing, if it's worn it will make shifting sloppy. If that's ok and you've got fresh oil in it, then it's probably just time for a rebuild.

auto or 5 speed? In either case replace the oil and get your cluch freeplay adjusted if it's a 5sp that will help some. Mine is rough too I just double clutch it most of the time. I hear some of the synth fluids out there can do wonders

Don't need to. I use regular old 80w90 in my 220k mile tranny. Shifting when cold is a little difficult but otherwise it works fine.

Redline makes a Synth fluid that is designed specifically for older tranny's.

I read a recent thread somewhere else that suggested overfilling the transmission slightly improved the shifting. I have not tried it yet but am tempted as my truck is difficult to shift when cold.

I have also heard that there is a friction modifier sold by Ford for their trucks that works well in our 5 speeds. It is supposed to improve shift quality.

I did try synthetic transmission oil and was not happy. I thought it made it more difficult to shift and switched back after about 2 weeks. I still have the synthetic that I saved out of the transmission. I assume it is clean enough to put in one of my diffs next time I change them. If I don't stir it up much, anything that was in the transmission oil should have settled to the bottom anyway.

I just got done replacing my bushings on my shifter. i bought both the seat and the end cap but found only the seat was a little worn but not too bad so i replaced that. nothing inproved too much because it wasn't really worn to bad to begin with. extreme easy to do though so i recommend at least checking to see if you need it. does anyone have any ideas on what i should try next? i have new bushing and fresh oil. what next beside a rebuild. i guess i could just live with it but would rather fix it. i hope its not grinding anything down.

Verify that your clutch is releasing all the way and not dragging.

Check the freeplay at the pedal against specs in your year service manual. Have someone actuate it while you watch from underneath to see if the arm is moving a good amount. You could put it in gear parking brake off (use wheel chocks!) and lift one rear tire so you can rotate it while someone presses and releases the pedal, if the travel is not enough it'll release almost on the floor if at all. Should be somewhere in the middle of the pedal travel.

Something else that can be overlooked, do you have thick floormats that may be interfering with the pedal going down all the way?

Which synthetic did you use? The best results that I've read about and by my experience is to use Redline MT90.

anybody know what that friction modifier is? i am thinking of adding it to my tranny cuz the mobil synthetic is not giving the syncro's enough friction to shift smoothly, maybe that stuff will help out?
