Rotor/hub

Going to replace the rotors on my '94 Runner. To seperate the hub, do I have to knock out the studs or is it held on a different waY.

Nope, you don't need to knock out the studs. You need to pull off the grease cap on the hub, then take off the hub, then take off the rotor from the hub. I'd get a repair manual for specks but it's pretty straight forward.

Mine were fairly rusted and needed a lot of penetrating oil. Putting the rotor in a vice helps a lot when romoving the bolts.

Where are the bolts located and how many? I have the Chiltons manual it it dosen't say squat about it.

Backside of the hub, have to pull the whole assembly off to get to them so it's also a good time to repack the wheel bearings. 6 of 'em back there, an impact wrench is handy for removing them.

I found the best way to hold the hub was by putting it back into the tire I had already taken off. No problem to remove the bolts in this manner.

I had no trouble removing the bolts connecting the hub and rotor, I had difficulty removing the hub from the rotor afterwards. The haynes manual said to knock out the studs (but this is wrong, leave them in!)

I used a shop press to push the hub out of the old rotor. I doubt that there's a better way to do it without damaging the hub. That thing was really wedged in there!

Here's a pic of the parts you need to remove to get the hub and rotor off the truck.

the haynes manuel says that because you have to do that on the 81-85 toyota 4x4's it's stupid that they don't clarify the difference on 86 and newer 4x4's :mad:

Why a press. Don't the two just mate up together? I didn't thnink there was anything to press in.

The inner part of the hub fits tightly into the main opening in the rotor. Depending on how long your hub and rotor have been together, the rust and whatnot will make it difficult to separate the two. I was so disappointed after removing all the bolts connecting the hub and rotor to find that the two were still stuck together, I mean really stuck together!

I'll try and find a pic to show you.
