Auto Tranny Problems - Newby

Hi everyone!!

OK, so I have read many of the threads on tranny problems, but still can't seem to find an answer. I have a 1986 SR5 Pickup 4X4 with a 2.4 L Turbo and an Automatic transmission with the Normal/Power option. My problem is as follows - at random intervals when I stop at a red light my tranny stays in what seems to be high gear. I have to manually drop it into low gear so I can move. As well, it does the same thing when I put it into drive first thing, sometimes. I also drive with the overdrive off. I took it to the local tranny garage and they said they couldn't find anything wrong and to bring it in when it acts up again.
I am getting a second opinion on their assessment.

Should I get a tranny flush?
Should I drive with the overdrive on or off - I do mostly city driving?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!

OK, no one is interested...

I went and got a full tranny flush with the detergent. they said my pump pressure was low, but by the end of the flush it increased a little. Is there any way to have them increase the pump pressure?

Have a good one!!!

I wouldn't take your truck back to the same tranny garage. I think they were more interested in taking your money than solving the problem.

This sounds like a common problem with Aisin A340 series autos. The problem is likely one of your shift solenoids is clogged. There are several threads I have replied to covering this same issue. Try searching again with "shift solenoid". If no luck I will look up the threads again.

The shift solenoids are about $50 US. and are not difficult to change. Worst case you can buy them and take them to a mechanic to change for you.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I have had this problem for a few months now, and you are the only one who has any idea as to what the problem could be.

Again, thanks!
