is this the right kind of strap?

Yesterday i performed my first real recovery in snow, i didnt have the traction to just tow my buddy out so i just yanked. it seemed like it was a very stiff. I assumed the strap would stretch a little when i yanked, do i have the right kind of strap or do i need to get something else?

this is what i have.

That will work, but it doesn't say anything about having any "give" to it, like a snatch strap does. You have to be careful, because taking a run at it might cause it to fail.

Hit up YouTube for examples of towing fails.

I posted this on another thread:

I finally pulled my speedstrap out of its bag to pull out a kid in an F-150. I can only say it worked as advertised, and the fact that he didn't have any good attachment points (no hooks or rings) meant that I didn't have to run it through a loop or tie it or anything. Just laced it, pulled, unlaced, and put it away. OK, it sat in my back seat until the snow on it melted and dried, then I looked for dirt, THEN put it away. At any rate, it seems well made and I'm glad I made the choice.

for the sake of all of us, and your truck. Dont use a hook related tow strap to pull people out... all it takes is one yank to snap the line and send that hook flying at you at over 100 mph... lol

yeah, hook straps and chains hurt when they give. I keep 2 or 3 straps in the toolbox for pulling. Now I have seen people take a car tire and put it between 2 straps to pull people out with a jerk "NOT RECOMENDED"

i was not using hooks, had a couple 3/4in shackles on each end. i was just surprised when i assumed i had a recovery strap and it didnt have any give in it. it worked just fine, i got my friend out no prob. I really like those master pull ropes. i have to look into them and start saving.

Here is one source for the Speed Strap. It is more expensive than I recall, but I'm still happy with mine.

http://www.teakatrucks.com/Big-Daddy...red-342201.htm

I just pulled a guy over the last weekend, and then ended up getting tugged out of a bad situation myself when I got a little too deep in the snow and a little off camber. The guy that pulled me had a chain already hooked up to his rig and hooked me up. He started pulling and the chain broke, fortunately causing no damage. I pulled my strap out from behind the back seat of my Tundra, laced it up, and he pulled me out. The extra length of mine helped him get some momentum and onto better surface. I couldn't be happier with it.

I have one of those straps with the metal hooks. If they aren't for recovery what are they good for?

A good rated tow strap with metal hooks is ok for towing. The only problem with them and the reason most don't have them is because they can be dangerous. While most come with just looped ends that are meant to be used with "D" rings or hooks on the vehicle. the straps that have a hooked attached to them may come loose. If you simply place the hook around a tow point and pull with constent tension no real big problem. but if you start yanking and the strap become loose and taught again that hook may loose what ever good placement it had. Now if the strap is yanked without that hook being properly seated you have a metal that is gonna come flying through your rear window or back at the person your pulling.

Just an FYI, most if not all ORV parks requires hook-less/d-ring-less style straps.

I suggest Bubba Rope and synthetic shackles. Get the recovery rope that's appropriate for the weight of your vehicle. (Yes, I know this thread is ages old)
