I bought the trial gear ifs eliminater kit it says you have to use a 1981 and up front solid axle. Do you guys know what the difference is between 80 and 81? I have a friend who will give me a 1980 sold front axle but my kit says to use 81 and up.

 

Main website page says 79-85 SFA.
Install instructions say 81 and up.

Only thing I know that is different is the axle gusseting. Never personally used anything but an 84/85 axle.

No, the gusseting on the bottom of the earlier year model axles is shorter or there is none. The pumpkin is going to be on the passenger side. Diff armor should work. I don't know of anything that won't work with that axle with that kit.

 

Some people actually prefer the older style axles (79-81) with no gusset on the bottom...

There's about a quarter to half inch extra ground clearance under the driver side axle tube!

 

OK well I found a 1985 solid front axle i think im just going to get that for $300 bucks is that a good deal ? its newer so i hope its in better condition. And wabfab I might buy some 5.29 gears from you guys do they hold up well ?

 

5.29 gears hold up great, my roomate has been running them on his SAS 4runner for the last 4 years with aussies and hasnt had a problem yet, at first the small pinion will through off but the strength is there

 

sweet I might buy some. I have the axle all rebuilt and sanded just needs welded which I had to repair my welder because its been many years sense ive used it.

 

The 79-80 axles have a smaller hub assembly, lug nut base diameter, and rotor design than the 81-85s. So, the reason why TG say they won't work is because their new rotors won't work with the older hub assembly on the 79-80 axles. Lug nuts won't press into the back of the hub/rotor. Although, you could just swap in a later model hub assembly.

 

I second what ScottyC has to say. If you found an 85 though you're good to go. I would say $300 is fair. I don't know about your neck of the woods but those axles are getting hard to find around here. Prices are going up.

 

the rotors for the 79 and 80 pickups mount with with 6 bolts not wheel studs and 2 bolts. 79 & 80 axles will need an 81 or so fj40 rotor to get a vented rotor. trail gear doesn't sell a 6 hole rotor.

 

hey guys i got a question i have a 1998 toyota 4runner 2wd i have got some of my 4wd conversion parts but i was wondering these kits you can buy to convert you 4runner to sas. the ones form marlin and trail gear say there for a ---- to a 1995 would they work one my 98 or do i need to get it from somewhere else and if so where from.
