Lockers are not required, tho' without one there are a couple spots that may pose a challenge.

Yeup... it's a REALLY nice run through there. If it stays dry, you won't have a problem getting through it at all. If it gets a bit wet, then it'll get some pucker going.

I just put up a thread about the mini run that Ben hosted last weekend. There's a link to pics in there:

(ummm, a moving house probably won't be included in your scenery on the 31st)

Lockers are technically NOT required as such, but keep in mind that there aren't many bypasses. It's not like the hill at Tinkham where you can just give up.

You will be able to do the vast majority of the trail unassisted if it's dry, but some of the hill climbs are pretty loose, even when dry. You will need to balance your tendancy to be pretty light on the skinny pedal with the fact that you MUST continue.

Folks, I mentioned it in the run description, but I will say it again. You MUST have *REAL* front and rear tow points on this run. Period. If you can't get up a hill and don't have tow points, we might still pull you up, but the damage is on you.

Now that I've been there, I can echo another side of this.

Outside of there not being many bypasses to obstacles, there aren't many places to pull off the trail - and turning around isn't really an option. There are bail-out points in the way of "traditional" FS roads along the way that will lead you out - but they're not an option without a good map or a guide.

If you need to make multiple passes at something, then you have to keep a calm head since you will _have_ to continue on. That can be tough when there's traffic behind you from another group.

Having explored those roads over the past few years, I would ammend that to SOME of them will lead you out... There's an amazing number of dead ends that spur off the Naches. Some of the roads are fun and go places, others just go up a few hundred yards and end. You can get out that way, but the trick is knowing where

Last year while FS70 was closed on the West end of the trail, after the better part of two months, I found a series of roads and trails that punched through into Government Meadows.

What Mark said about there not being too many places to get over is true. The trail can be crowded, so sometimes you have to set your mind to getting through a section and just do it. I have seen rigs have problems with the hill climbs, especially going East to West and large groups stack up behind them to jeer... not pretty...

This talk about lockers is kind of scary. I don't have one, but I may still come.

Don't let it scare you away from running this trail. There'll be plenty of support to get you through safely, just take your time when negotiating the tight areas and you'll get through without any damage other than possibly a little NW pinstriping.

I've run it many many times with open diffs, IFS, and 33" BFG ATs with not too much difficulty.

Oh yeah! I ran it when my truck was stock (31's, open diffs) east to west and west to east with no problems.

You'll do fine... I only had my rear locker engaded for one spot last weekend and I really didn't need it. As dry as it'll be, it'll be a breeze for you.

Plus, the folks that will be out with you are all great people - you'll have plenty of help and encouragement.

"Just do it" as the saying goes.
