June 21 weekend, Denver area trip plans

I thought I'd start a thread for the weekend. Mojo would like to get a run together. I'm thinking about attending the Kremmling Crawl, an ameteur rock crawl, but I'm open to other plans.

Trails I'd enjoy:
- Holy Cross
- the trails above Breckenridge we drove last summer (forget the names, but south-west of Red Cone
- Wheeler Lake (not sure if it'll be snow-free yet)

Well, this will really be our first run this season - So I'm looking to do something moderate - not too difficult. Need to clear up some of the 4x4 cobwebs before I tackle some of the trails you listed above.

I was thinking about Moody Hill & Crystal Mountain - up near Loveland/Ft. Collins. area. I know those trails are open.

As far as those trails up by Breck. I would think they might still be quite snowy - but I don't know.

Wheeler lake - I heard it's open up till about the last waterfall area - just before bowling ball hill.

Holy Cross - not for me just yet.

I guess we'll see if there is any interest. I forgot about the Kremmling Crawl being the same weekend. We thought about going - but I'd like to get some "seat time" in rather than spectate.

FWIW guys, I just came back from Glacier Peak via the Jefferson side (i.e. michigan creek). There is still snow above 11k feet, some roads are not passable and you generally figure this out as you're sliding backwards down the mud you just came up.

Just a heads up... might want to pick lower-elevation roads (below timberline should be passable, or at least something you can bust through) for another 2-3 weeks.

Have you done these trails before? I haven't. But I just checked them out on 4x4Trails.net and they look like they might be a fun day trip.

Your rig is set up adequately for it. (Locker, sliders, lift, tires.) I forget how much experience you have doing this sort of driving, but you needn't be that intimidated. Maybe you can try it at CO4RJ.

I'll talk to Donna and see what she wants to do for the weekend. Going on a day run might be more enjoyable than going to Kremmling.

By the way, Saturday would preferable to us over Sunday.

Yes, we did these trails 2 summers ago. It was a fun day trip - there are some rock obstacles that you can make harder or easier depending on the line you choose. I think these trails are good for all skill levels.

Here are a few pics from when we went up... Crystal Mountain

So what do you think - should we make it official? I'd like to post this over at 4x4 wire. I know there are a few guys that live in Ft. Collins that might make the run with us.

Told ya... the snow is sticking around longer than usual this year, and where it's melting it is making the roads a complete mess. I was up last night sliding sideways down what should have been very easy roads; granted I don't have MTR's on yet, but it still seemed silly to me.

It was melting quick though, another month and I'd say it should all be clear.

Maybe Bill Moore Lake? I'll ask Yoder if he has any ideas. Maybe we could explore trails around the Boulder area (not Left Hand).

While we were waiting around in the Rock Graden on the Spring Creek trail yesterday, we met a gal from a web site called TrailDamage.com. The calendar on their web site says they're doing Gillespie Gulch on Sunday at 11:00 (check out the announcement). It doesn't sound like the most difficult parts are manditory. Maybe we should consider joining them. (Or we could do it ourselves on Saturday.)

I'm partial to a Saturday Run myself. Although it would be nice to run with a group that has done the trail before.

I think I read on the www.colorado4x4.org that Bill Moore Lake still has snow on it.

Gillespie Gulch sounds interesting - as long as we avoid "Nugget Hill" - that looks pretty sketchy.

So, I'd say let's tennatively plan on that for Saturday. We'll see what else comes to light in the next day or two as far as other trail options and any other interested people. Maybe finalize the plans in the next day or two.

Sound good?

John,

This morning I was invited to join a mutual friend of ours on an easy, quick run on Saturday. I have accepted the offer, and will contact you privately to see if you want to join us. (This isn't "open to the public" because we need this to be a quick, half-day trip.) If you want to organize something else here, instead, you're free to do that.

Additionally, I think Donna and I and the kids are going to join the TrailDamage group on Sunday.

Dang - wouldn't you know - as of today (friday the 20th) they opened Crystal Mountain. I would have like to do that trail tomorrow. Oh well, maybe in the next few weeks.
