We are still solidifying the details, but a page with photos of the trails, maps and a concrete itinerary will be going up in the next few days. Many of us will be up there Friday.
I will put together a list this weekend, but I am taking off now for a long wheeling trip to the woods. Chat with you Monday.

Hey
I was lookin around and came on this thread.
This is the stuff that i'd love to do, most i've done are forest service roads and a few small power line trails.
I think im going to sign up but a lil worried about what exactly I will be able to do. Right now, basiclly stock, hoping to get aisins and downeys and new bils sometime this summer, but running on street tires, don't get to offroad much cause I don't know anyone who does around here so these were the best choice.
What exactly will be the extent of my ventures? I wanna become hardcore someday, but Im a total noob right now.
Any ideas on how hard i can push it?
Maybe if things go well, this'll push me to get some more mods!
and finally meet some local yotas and offroaders
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks!
Steve
ps why do so many steves drive yotas? its sorta.........scary

Two quick suggestions, rather than your planned mods, get a good sliders and a set of MT tires. You can probably find some used 31s that will fit without any lift. None of the other stuff you mentioned will do much for your offroad ability. The tires are critial for traction and a street tire does not have the sidewall protection required to run off road. You'll get more bang for your buck going for a GOOD set of Mud Terrain tires.
Since your clearance is pretty low with a stock rig, sliders are highly recommended. They not only protect your rocker panels but also keep some of the roots and rocks from reaching and saying hello to your doors.
A set of sliders does not mean a set of Smittybilt Nerf bars. You need to look at something that is designed for it's protective qualiies, not it's looks. Look at Allpro, Badland Bumpers, AOR4x4 for some samples of good sliders. There are others but these are along the design type that you'll need.
If get a set of good sliders and 4 good tires and pay attention to your trail guide, you should do just fine on this trip.

As a newbie, is "Mud Terrain" a brand, style, concept? i.e., if I head to Les Schwab tomorrow and say "31" MT's please" then will I set people off laughing?
I did okay on the Tinkham Road run last Thursday, but it was pointed out to me that my tires are in need of replacement. I kinda' knew that, so now I'm in the mood to make it happen.
You say that 31" tires will clear on stock suspension, will they run on stock wheels? I don't have the funds to do both...
Also, what happens to things like the spedo reading and mileage?Right now, I'm running these as 255/70/16's:

Even though we're stretching the topic you are probably not the only with the same question, so here goes my $.02 again.
If you can get to a 4Wheel Parts store (Tacoma or Lynnwood) these guys have some pretty good pricing on off-road tires. I like the Goodyear MTR's that I have. Goodrich also makes an excellent set of MT tires that are reasonably priced.
Despite the fantastic traction of the swampers, I never recommend them for a daily driver rig. I did that for a while, sounded like I was flying is a small plane all the time.
Les Schwaab is pretty spendy. Discount Tire often has some good offroad tires.
If I was to make a suggestion for a street driven rig that wants good offroad performance from the same tire - The Goodyear MTR or BFG MT. There are lots of others, these are just two that are used a lot and well liked.
If you're looking for 31's though, put out some feelers on different bulliten boards. There are lots of people that have put on 31's driven them for a year or two, then gone bigger.
31x10.50 tires will fit no problem on your stock wheels. In fact, I've but 35x12.50 tires on stock wheels without difficulty. Your speed will be off by only a couple of MPH at highway speeds.

Mark, since you made that hill climb last week, IMO you won't have any trouble at all on Naches.

:pat: Hey Steve, I am from Tigard with a stock 98 4Runnner other some A/T tires. I figure that us newbies show up and if we find a part of the trail we dont want or cant do, we find a way around or go back to camp and cool down.
I figure we can learn by watching close to 30 other rigs hit the trail and then try or have 30 guys give us pointers.
It seems like the event is aimed at all levels and from the post I don't think they will get mad if we ask rather than whine we couldnt do something.
See ya there, and thanks in advance guys.

GDY750-219-020 31X10.50R15LT $175.95
The first two are prices on the new BFG MTs the last is the Goodyear MTR.
This will all fit on the stock 18x8" rim

I would definitely advise shopping around, TireRack lists this tire for $131. You should be able to find them for close to this in town. Try everywhere including places like Walmart and Costco.

I too have heard rumor that Walmat is selling these tires, but I've heard of some problems with them only putting the stock tire size on. Check it out. You may have to bring in 4 wheels without the vehicle :o)

Since you have the Limited Im sure your running 16inch rims on stock 265/70/R16 tires. The chosen tire size are 265/75/R16 or the 285/75/R16.
Im running 265/75/R16 BFG Mud Terrains on my rig. These tires are awesome offroad. Highway driving is little louder than AT tires.
Your rig won't have any problems with this tire size. You may get a little rubbing at full turn since you are at stock height but it will be minimal.
There are alot of members who have gone to 285's and are real happy with them. However you will definitely need at least 2.5 lift and you will have to bang out some of the wheelwell area to reduce rubbing.

Just to muddy the waters a bit (pun intended), I am not a big fan of the Goodyear MTR's. They are awesome tires for rock crawling, but for general trail use around here, they don't self clean as well as I would like.
But, at 31 inches, you have a lot of possibilities open to you. You can go with the Goodyear MTR's or the BFG M/T's. In addition, Schwab sells two tires you might be interested in;
The TXR's are an excellent all around tire, comparable to an agressive all terrain tire. You can see them on my truck at http://www.watrd.com/photos/20020707012.jpg but those are 32's.
The RVT's are a more agressive mud terrain type tire with a bit more off road traction, but a bit more on road noise. You can see those on my truck at http://www.watrd.com/photos/20021117021.JPG but they are 33's.
Currently, I am loving my BFG M/T's. I had them siped, so they are not as slick as stock on wet pavement and you saw how they performed in the loose stuff. You can them on my truck at http://www.watrd.com/work/morerecent.jpg but they are 35's.

what to do, what to do...
Thanks for the other ideas Rob... I appreciate all the info I can get. I tend to fear talking to a tire shop 'cause I don't know enough to know if I'm sold a line or not. But then, that's why we're all here.
And yeah, I'll be getting the new tires siped. I didn't know about the process when I got the ones I have now, and I've been bitching about these in the rain for 3 years now!To push this closer back to on-topic
, how was your trip? Got pics?!!

Three years??!! You get three years to a set of tires??!! heheheh I usually get bored with mine within a year and sell them for something new... One of these days I will actually wear a set out.
It was nice up there. Sunny and upper 70's. I got a bit BBQ'd, but that should fade to a dull roar over the next couple of days. I took a ton of pictures, but they are all close ups of various mods on the truck for my site. I have been in this area so many times, I didn't even think to shoot the trail or scenary.

One last post on this sub thread.
Find some used 31s. Do some searching, check ebay. Most off road shops offer a for sale board for used stuff as well. Pick up a set of used tires (and perhaps wheels). When you do finally go for a lift, THEN get the ultimate tires that you want.
Just about any mud terrain tire will do better than your street tires particularly in side wall protection.
I am partial to the Goodyear MTR's only because I have them...
Rob, next time we get on a run together, we'll have to do a side by side comparison on how the treads clean out. I haven't yet seen that as a problem, yet....
