My old T-100 has 133K on it and I have never replaced the timing belt. I know it was replaced by the dealer around 50K when it was recalled for the head gasket problem years ago. I'm gonna buy the kit that NAPA sells which includes the tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, and belt and all the related gaskets. I'm replacing all three engine belts too as I believe they are original, hoses are good(newer).

Do you think there is anything else that should be replaced while I am doing this job?

Have you looked at AirCabinMan's excellent kit(s) on eBay?

Crank bolt (FSM lists as non-replaceable) and thermostat/t-stat gasket for sure. Cam and crank seals if they are showing signs of leaks.

Remember, 217 ft-lbs when torquing down the crank bolt.

I did aircabinmans kit about 2 weeks ago now, I chose to do the kit with just the waterpump, tensioner, idler belt and associated gaskets. I also put new radiator hoses on and changed the t-stat.

All of the parts in the kit were OEM or very good parts (koyo for example).

May even want to replace the cam/crank seals regardless of signs of leakage while youre in there....

Is there a particular reason for replacing the crank bolt? I've got a genuine yota 1996 T100 FSM and cannot find any reference to replacing it or anything that states "non replaceable". There *is* a part # for it.

Does anyone know what the Camshaft Tensioner Hydraulic Assy is for and whether or not it should be replaced(what to look for). I can't find a reference to it in the timing belt section of my FSM.

My 95 FSM for the Tacoma is like yours.....it makes no mention. However, I have seen later 5vz-fe FSMs spec it as non-reusable (about $10 from the dealer) and the torque spec is 217 ft-lbs.

Toyota updated the spec from 184 ft-lbs to 217 ft-lbs to address issues of the crank bolt coming loose and, at the same time, the crank bolt became non-reusable in the FSM. Fun reading.

The tensioner keeps proper tension on the timing belt. It's in the timing belt inspection section of my FSM. Many of us change it whenever doing the timing belt.

Rockauto sells an Aisin kit i used a couple weeks back on my sienna and everything was oem, Mitsuboshi timing belt, Koyo bearings, and water pump of course was Aisin, and if you search they have a 5% discount code online.

The crank bolt could probably be re-used if some locktite was applied to the threads.

I personally wouldnt bother with replacing it. But for $10.... may as well....

Thanks to everyone for your input. I found that some timing belt "kits" include the Camshaft Tensioner Hydraulic Assembly(Napa's definition) and some do not. Napa's kit does not include it but one from Advance Auto does(Dayco kit...."Timing Belt Actuator" is what they call it). The NAPA branded part alone is $78, $49 for the Dayco at Advance. . I trust Napa parts more than the big chain discount stores(been burned too many times).

Toyota dealers sell the hydraulic tensioner for about $50 also.

I agree, I should have had someone get one of these kits for me since I do not have a eBay account nor paypal. I already got everything I needed today from Napa. It was a lot more $$$ than these kits you showed me. I appreciate the info though.

I could do it if my work schedule was not so busy and I had a place to work on it. I don't have a garage or barn, heck I've got almost 10acres and don't even have a shady tree to work under! well at least not near the house. Last year I did both front axles, on my back, in the driveway, on jack stands...never again. About 3 weeks ago I did both front calipers on the same d/w and fried like an egg in my old griswold skillet. I am having someone else do this job plus a bunch of other stuff that's way overdue, I don't have the time or patience right now plus I'm doing stuff on my old Jeep, it ain't a happy week for me unless I get a fist of grease and a face full of grit at least once

could always just buy a total build - rebuild kit, 650 bucks has everything you need includoing forged pistons and pushrods and rockers, i just wish somebody made performance heads for these engines the 5vz-fe is a great little thing i love it, id love it more with boost.

I too used the non-oem kit from Aircabinman. All good parts (aisin, mitsuboshi, etc.). Interesting that most of those parts were made in some place called "Usa."

Actually, many are the same exact parts you could have bought in Toyota boxes for more dough.

5,000 miles so far on mine, belt wasnt even bad either just replaced for GP since according to previous owner was done about 140k ago.
