stuck in park

I'm trying to help my dad inlaw

Hes got a T100 stuck in park, I've read on here that there is a cable connect to the brake peddle that disengages the brake safety switch for shifting out of park, but he's still having trouble.

Any more details on how to clean or disco the cable?

i thought it was an electrical switch. my shifter has a shift lock override on the front left side of the shifter. could be dirt/dust in the electrical switch on the shifter or maybe the brake light switch.
my shifter came out of a 2000 4 runner though.

The lock out cable probably just needs to be cleaned when you remove it from the bracket.

Brake lights work? If so, then the brake switch is okay. When you push the brakes to shift out of park, the brake switch sends power to the shift lock solenoid and that allows you to shift out of park. Most times the shift lock solenoid gets stuck from spilled drinks. Pull the covers off the shifter console and verify the shift lock cylinder operation.

Not true on the T-100 auto transmission. It's a mechanical lockout on the shifter. You can test this by disconnecting the lock out or at the shifter link in the engine bay. You'll be able to shift it even without a battery installed.

All auto shifters on the T-100 are column mounted...

I forgot they had shifters on the tree. Well the brake switch is still incorperated into that system. Every auto trans has to see the brake signal to be able to shift out of park.

Not on the T-100. Take the battery out and you can still shift out of Park by stepping on the brake pedal...no battery or juice required. It's a mechanical lock out on the shifter.

Thanks so much!! I'd found a thread leading me to look @ fuse 16, which was a good fuse and Chilton's had little to be found. Ordered a couple manuals today but really need to get factory service manual $. Thanks again.
