snorkel??

i take my truck offroad all the time and i have a stock air box which does a pretty good job keeping water and mud out. would getting a snorkel increase my chances of water getting into the engine? if not, where do i find one?

the purpose of a snorkel is to keep water OUT of your engine in deep water that would otherwise flood your stock intake. snorkels are usually good at keeps rain and such out of the intake and will of course keep you dry in deep water. if youre crossing water deep enough to warrant getting a snorkel, other things need to be done to ensure your vehicle will still run. those things include but are not limited to sealing your exhaust, raising its output location so you dont suck water in if you stop, sealing your electrical system (distributor, all connector), coating your door seals with vaseline would also be a good idea. there are other thinhings to take care of. head over to safari4x4.com to check out their snorkels, theyre good. someone who actually OWNS one will pipe in here soon.

i own one... and its sweet... gotta raise all your breathers, if possible on your truck, feed them all into the actual snorkel, or atleast as high up as you can get them, been in some deep water before (over the headlights) and not a problem yet, except for weeds being everywhere underneath the truck, what truck do you have?

Problem with the stock intake is its right behind the Headlight

You dip into a creek/mud hole wrong and you risk the chance of a hydro Lock.

Buddy did this in his toy doing a simple river crossing, Went down the embankment nosed into water gave her a little gas and that was it for the motor.

If you're looking for a snorkel for a T100, ARB/Safari didn't make one. However a few folks have retrofitted one offered for the first V6 Tacomas ('95-'98-ish) onto a T100. ARB Part #SS170HF

I think all it took was a little longer bracket to attach the snorkel to the A pillar. Maybe a little dremel work around the base where it meets the fender. Pretty simple modification if I recall correctly.

Here's one on a guy's T100 in Alaska. Oh yeah, he did a D44 SAS too!

internal snorkel

another option you can do is a cheap internal (fender) snorkel. i have managed to get some water in my airbox so i decided to do that on mine. it raised it up few inches and a foot+ away from the nose. all you gotta do is replace the stock elbow with some pvc pipe. here are some write ups:https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f31/4th-gen-2-more-3rd-gens-internal-snorkel-installed-46043/ http://char.tuiasi.ro/vw/reality/rog...s/Snorkle.html

stock (notice the mud on the inner fender)

you could do that if you like to not have good airflow...not worth it if you ask me

that doesnt look like it would get very good air flow. i might just keep the intake stock. it does a pretty good job of keeping water out as it is. thanks for all the advice.
