Bombardier Iltis, ex-DND. I just rolled over 62,000 kms on a weekend camping trip.
I replaced the flasher box, and changed the wire to the fuel pump when I relocated it up front... Everything works perfectly. Why would I "rewire the dash"? Is this about some rumor that it will catch on fire spontaneously or something? It has a map light, 3 gauges (volt/oil pres/temp), 3 dummy lights, a heater/hazard switch, push button ignition, and integrated speedo/fuel gauge cluster. Why would I rewire that?
I think there are a lot of rumors and mis-information floating around about the Iltis. I don't mind as long as it keeps the parts and vehicles cheap.
p.s. Still looking for a T-100. I almost bought a 2003 Tundra, but the deal was too good to be true. It was in 3 accidents and 1 was a total loss.

) were notorious for dash fires caused by wiring shorts but the 3rd purchase series ones [from VW direct] were ok... that and they were draughty and cold as sin in the winter. But I still want one myself lol... Does it have a tach? For winter use there was an idea I saw once for insulated liners for soft top YJs that could be adapted...

the 95 SR5 4x4 my brother just got has a VERIFIED 501,362 MILES on the original engine. That poor 3.4L has been thru hell and back... literally. engine compartment fire 3 years ago and it still runs like a champ. not even a CEL code.. and, YES, the CEL does still work.

I found mine with a beat up 240k on it. Rust is an issue. Everything but the motor and tranny is an issue. It would be one thing if it was cherry and came with a big stack of receipts from the dealer. But, every one with 200k on it is not worth 5k. I'm in $1800 and that much again in parts and tires. And it is almost peaceful to drive but still ugly.
There's not much of anything aftermarket for them. Which does suck also. Not many in junk yards either. There are older tundras out there. I picture them as luxurious.

Definitely, look for rust!
My buddy and I went wheeling yesterday, and his whole rear axle assembly in his T100 rotated upward (meaning the third member was at a 45 degree angle!), and in turn ripped 2 big gaping holes right under both spring perches AND breaking his rear driveshaft at the transfer case output shaft. Really, it was his fault for never addressing the issue, but I've heard from Toyota techs that it's not uncommon either.

High mileagae is always a little scary, but alot depends on how well it was taken care of. Being a Toyota and previous care, I would feel more comfortable with it then some other brands out there.

If I was the one that put that many miles on it, I wouldn't sweat driving it cross country. But buying used, I'm scared to buy anything used with over 150k miles. I worked as a mechanic for many years and even the cleanest vehicles would come in with major drivetrain failures due to lack of maintenance or extreme use. I would just be extremely cautious
