upgrade headlights for 87 22re p/u
This is my first post.. Just joined today, but been visiting for months.
I am picking up my rebuilt engine tomorrow, and now is the time to make some other changes. 1 major issue I have is night visibility. My headlights suck.
Ive been told if I want to go LED I may have to change all the wiring. I would like to know what are the best, brightest headlights i can use that are just plug and play, no rewiring.
Any suggestions?

Yours would be a 1st gen. 4Runner. (basically the same as a 2nd gen pickup) I used an H4 headlight upgrade in my '85 and it works well:

Best thing you can do is a simple relay wiring harness upgrade:

1st gen = 79-83
2nd gen = 84-88
3rd gen = 89-95
4th gen = 95.5-2004 (tacoma)
5th gen = 05-current (tacoma)
i think you are covered. as they fit my 88.

I have some clear headlights on my 3rd gen. I also installed 170/100W IPF H4 bulbs and made a new wiring harness for my lights with Hella H4 connectors and good wires.
The light output is amazing, my buddy has a HID kit in the same light housings and my beam pattern is much better, so my lights actually work better than his HIDs.

I took a set of Blue lens H4 headlights that I bought off E-bay for my 91 Prelude years ago and put them in my 88 Toy.
they pluged right in, you can change out the bulbs, it came with a city light built in. they where like 9.99 and I had them on my toy for 4 yrs until I sold my rig, they worked great. nice upgrade over stock!

After installing the Hella H4 lamps, install a simple set of relays to boost the headlight voltage, and you're set. Need help with wiring or relays? Hit up your local stereo shop they can do it for you.
If you feel the need for more lighting (after relays) you can swap the bulb wattage to whatever you want, as long as you don't leave the highbeams on when the vehicle is stopped or else you risk melting the headlight plugs themselves.
