Hi. ... I have a stock 1986 ifs 4x4 22re 5 spd pickup (15" rim) . My front caliper froze and rotor is warped. What upgrade can I do WITHOUT UPGRADING THE MC OR BOOSTER. I was looking at the 1992-95 4Runner or T100 rotors and calipers, as I have read they might be a bolt on upgrade. Which year 4runner/t100 will work? (+ trim backing plate) Anyone have exact part numbers ?

One needs to use care some of those brake upgrades will not work with some 15" wheels.

I know with the Tundra calipers one needs to go to 16" wheels.

I can`t get excited about brake upgrades I just keep my brakes in good repair makes it easier for me to know what is on there.

Do Yourself a favor stay away from T100 parts they can be hard to find even simple parts at times.

V6 calipers.

I found 95 4runner V6 calipers with new rotors for cheap at the local pull a part.

They have 4 large pistons vs the 4 cylinder has 2 large pistons /2 small pistons.

I put '92 4Runner V6 rotors and calipers on my '87 4Runner without changing the master cylinder and I am happy with the brake action and feel.

It was a braking improvement for me. Greater braking force with less pedal pressure.

Sometimes when you change to a larger master, you shoot yourself in the foot, defeating the advantage of larger diameter caliper pistons when you increase the master cylinder diameter as well.

I had a wrecked '92 V6 on hand, and when the '87s' wheel bearings needed service, I just changed over, hub and rotor complete, and caliper.

I am running 15" first gen SR5 alloy wheels on the '87 with the newer brakes.

I did have to trim the backing tin a bit with an angle grinder to install the larger calipers, but no biggie.

Sorry I can't help with part numbers.

I did a full V6 brake upgrade out of a '95 4runner and the stopping power increase was really amazing.

Are the 89 V6 rotors and calipers the same or will it need to be newer stuff?

I don't know for sure. The '92 4Runner rotors and calipers that I installed on my '87 are larger than the stock ones that came on my '87 Runner for sure.

I was lucky to have a '92 wreck to take them off of.

I think I read that a brake change was made starting with the 1992 models, but what really is on the earlier 2nd gen models, I can't say from personal experience.

I think I remember seeing something like F16Q or F18Q on the 2wd truck I was eyeballing.
My truck is a 91, 2wd.

About all I can say is that the stock '87 calipers have two large and two smaller pistons, while the '92 V6 calipers have 4 large pistons.

The '92 V6 rotors are of greater thickness than the '87s', so the calipers and rotors had to be changed as a set. I just changed the hubs complete.

I would'nt take it for granted that 2wd and 4x4 brakes are the same.

After reading a bit I find the F18Q calipers are a still a two piston caliper but they are a little bigger than the 22re stuff. Apparently the rotor is bigger too.

Now I'm wondering about the 92 and newer 2WD V6 calipers and rotors lol
