puzzling problem

Okay, we have been having some problems on my 1984 4-runner. Last night, it ran fine, and everything was working, but went out to start it this morning, and nothing. No juice, no nothing.

About a minute later the buzzer came on, and so did the interior lights. Tried to start it, and nothing, went dead again. Tested the battery, and it has juice.

We turn the key to the ON position, and can hear something click, of which we've tracked down to being the emissions relay.

So no power to start the vehicle, or anything. We tried to bump start it, and it fired right up, but NONE of the gauges were working, not even the RPM dial. Hazard lights worked, but no headlights (other than high-beams), no blinkers, reverse, brakes- nothing.

We're stumped on this one. Anyone have any advice or know what could be at play here?

have you checked the small wire that comes off the batt pos side and goes to the fuse box? pretty common to have that go out

I really need some help with this guys. My dad needs his truck for work tomorrow.

We've tried a bit more trouble shooting, playing with some of the relays, even bypassing them completely, yet we still haven't gotten anything. The moment we turn the key to ON, the entire truck dies. No interior lighting, no headlights, hazards- everything that was working dies the moment we turn the key to ON.

My dad is doubting that if we replaced the relays that everything will work as normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked the main hot wire to the starter to ensure it's not grounding out?

main fusible link is okay? All ends of both cables are corrosion free and no exposed wiring at the insulation ends?

Give us more to go on...

...just went throught this same problem with another user. It turned out to be a missing chassis ground. No headlights and no hazards means the problem is either a bad positive between the battery and the primary fuse panel, or its a bad primary (chassis) ground. Check it out https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f115...-start-214112/

I've had this happen on 2 different vehicles. My old Del Sol and my wife's old Legacy. BOTH ended up being a split in the positive battery terminal ring. With a visual inspection, neither of them looked split or broken in any way. just something to check out

Double check the power wire going from the positive terminal of the battery to the fuse box, i had an 84 4Runner and this wire corroded away on the inside and it lost all power, i replaced this wire and everything was good to go again.

It certainly sounds like a loose ground or even loose hot wire to the battery.
