My headlights come on fine and when you pull the lever back towards you the high beams come on, but when you push it forward to leave the high beams on, the high beam indicator in the cluster comes on but no lights at all. I replaced the headlight relay under the hood and checked the fuses for the right and left high beams. Could this be the combination switch? If so I am having a great deal of difficulty locating one of these. I have an '86 SR5 4x4 truck with tilt, no cruise and I have intermittent wipers. I pulled mine out and all the solders and contacts look fine, but who knows? I think the part number may be CBS1058. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

 

I have a similar issue with my 86. My low and high beams both work but somtimes when you pull the lever towards you to flash the highs they dont come on.

I believe you are on the right track with the switch, I'd just call every auto parts yard and store within resonable driving distance. Also check eslay, craigslist ect.

I also had this problem it is the contacts in the switch it's self. ( fix it 2wice but dose not last )
when i did my roundeyes conversion i order the headlight wire upgrade kit from 4crawler with the Heavy Duty Switched Ground Resistor.

I had to cut out the old switch in the steering column and solder in a used one that was in good condition.
the switch on mine was beyond repair.

Well, With no luck at the salvage yard, Ebay or any online vendors, I located the exact combination switch I needed at my helpful and reasonably priced Toyota dealer! Part Number 84310-35190 and it only set me back $250.00. My high beams work wonderfully and I have a beautiful new switch. I just wished they would have kissed me first......Ouch

 

Yep, installing a relay kit on the headlights is the permanent fix. Instead of that poor switch handling 15-20 amps of current each time you turn on or change the headlight mode, with the relays, you are only switching about 0.1 amps of current with that switch. This is all the relays need to turn on and off and then they handle the heavy duty current switching. Then if a relay does wear out (and they will), a new one is $5 or so and it plugs into a handy socket.

 

I had replaced the combo switch 2 times, now I just deal with it.

 

That is where adding a relay wiring harness for the headlights can help. Instead of the combo switch handling the direct 10-15 amp load of the headlights, it now only has to switch the ~0.1 amp load of the relay coils. Since putting the relays on my '85, have had no issues with my combo switch in 5+ years.

 

i have the same problem as csi-tech, with my 93 sr5 so its in the steering colum

 

No need to get a new switch, take it apart and sand the contacts with emery cloth.

 

Seriously old thread here. I want to add that I just did the contact cleaning in the combo switch and it seems to be working 100% right now. Who knows how long it will last. This involved removing the steering wheel, removing the lower dash under the steering wheel, undoing all the wiring clips and connectors that hold the combo switch in. It's best to completely remove the switch and fiddle with it on an open, clean, table with good light. Pain in the ass, but it has to be done... I have an '88 4Runner. The relay has a clear cover that has to come off before you can access the contacts. I lightly sanded the contacts and then bent the middle contact back just a little bit to make a better connection in the high beam "On" position.
