fog light switch blows fuses

fog light switch blows fuses
I started wiring up 2-55 watt lights yesterday. I wired it up using a 40 amp relay and a 20 amp capable illuminated switch. I wanted to tap the cig lighter for the switch power, but everytime I test them they will come on but when I turn them off it blows a fuse. I checked the wiring to the relay and had the ground and switch wire crossed. I fixed that thinking that was my problem. I then tapped the cig lighter fuse and the wire started smoking. This is my first wiring job and its very frustrating but I want to learn. Thanks for any help.

Update:
I ran a hot wire straight from + battery terminal with a 30 amp in line fuse. I had it connected to the switch and when I touched it to the + terminal it blowed the 30 amp fuse. I double checked AGAIN that the wires were hooked up correctly to the relay and checked all other wiring. It was correct. I am now lost as a duck and at the mercy of yotatech. lol

unplug the lights and put a new fuse in and see if it blows when u turn them on, if it does then i would check that the switch is not wired wrong and where u are sending power to ground, if it doesnt blow then hook up one light and retest, if it blows then it that light if not then go to the other light and hook it back up and see if it blows then,
u might have to replace the switch due to hooking up the wires wrong it could of fried something inside the switch.

Hey Justin it was one of 2 things. I replaced the switch and the relay. They work great now. Not sure what it was that had em messed up to start with. I do have another question though. I bought all the relays the parts store had which was 4. They are all 4 different brands. Why is each relay supposed to be wired up differently? I was under the impression that 30 would always be coming from the + terminal. 2 of the relays has the lights coming to 30. I just wired them to the relay the way the instructions said on the back.
