I don't have my notes from my reinstall, but I'll look for them later. It was just a lot of reading on here and manuals to figure out what went where. The Change in aalternators around 84 makes some of the info misleading.

 

OK, this system had 3 different charging systems, bad parts was 2 of them, the regulators had the same plug. But different color. I suspect you had a remote IC type, usually about 40 amps, the truck reg connector was white and had 5 wires. This is the remote IC system. The terminals for the alternator was ELF or earth, light and field. Field is an "A" circuit, ie grounding it full fields. Most parts stores hand out the wrong regulator, same plug, but green, this gives you a full field and results in overcharge and eventiually may damage the diode trio in the alternator.

The alternator I see is not a remote ICtype and the regulator being aftermarket is hard to tell because it may use 5 wires, but a solid state 5 wire was used to replace a mechanical 6 wire. Drawback to this is you probably only needed a set of brushes to fix it, now your core is long gone.

Go back, take alternator and regulator and get one for remote IC type
