Is it worth buying?

I am 16 years old and looking for a first car. I have found an 84 22r pickup 4x4. He is asking $700. The catch is there are many things wrong with it. Radiator, water pump, steering box, timing chain the list goes on and on.... Is it worth getting and fixing up?
-thanks

Depends on if your looking for a long term project.

If your plans are to make this street legal or just enough to drive in the fields big difference in $$$$ till it is finished.

It can lead to lots of frustration spending all your money on something you can`t drive for a very long time.

What are your mechanical skills like ??

Enough tools to get by??(one never has enough tools)

Nice place to work were you don`t have to be moving the vehicle all the time or under pressure to get it finished??

Myself I think this one might be better as a parts truck.

I would check the frame and make sure it is good. Just what you have described, there is going to be a lot more work to it. Being as young as you are, most likely you are going to want to drive it soon and that probably isn't going to happen. How is the funds situation? Along with what wyoming9 has mentioned as well, tools, time, place to work on it.

It could teach you a lot, but patience is probably something you have yet to acquire in my opinion. Plenty of info on here to help you learn it.

being young, i would suggest you find something that doesn't need quite as much work unless you have the time and money to spend...or a 2nd car to drive while this one is down. doing repairs yourself is great for learning, and the items listed can easily be done with basic tools -- but with what you've already mentioned this truck needs, I think you can get a better truck for what you will spend just in additional parts/time to repair them.

my suggestion is to find a different truck for a little more $ that's still in your price range; which runs and is safe to operate - then you can have something you can tinker with on the weekends and still go out and get your driving experience. I would not say it is unreasonable to find these trucks in the $1500-2500 range all across the country. you've already gone the smart way and decided an older Toyota pickup is right for you, now just find the right one. I wish I had that much sense buying my first car, i'd probably still be driving it

Thanks for all input on this. I got the price dropped down to $100. I have plenty of tools and enough money to get most the things fixed. With the price it is at I think I will bite the bullet and buy it. If it turns out there is to many expensive parts to fix I will sell it.

Bring that truck home, put your 600 in the bank, save another 600 to 1000 bucks and buy a daily driver pickup. It is not hard to find a great running/driving Toyota pickup for that price. I have an 86 turbo model and an 88 xtra cab. A lot of parts are interchangeable and this will give you a working model to compare your project truck to. Mine are slightly different, but I can't begin to express the benefit of having both trucks. Welcome to the Yota family!

Not that far from me but the trip would screw me on cost lol! Plus, there are 10000 yotas here in AZ. Are you going to buy that one and fix it up?
