Unhappy The worst thing that can happen to you and your car

Today i was driving to school and there is a turn i got to take to go into the parking lot...i did not relize that the road was so icy. i was in 2wd and my car just started sliding like no other. I did not press the gas or the break my car just started sliding and it slid right into the concrete pole. my front is trashed. my radiator is leaking like no other. I filed a report with the school and they are making me pay for the light post i hit because the light on the top fell onto my hood. I was trying to drive it home from school and i made half way before i had to put some coolent. but then i tried putting it in drive and it would not do anything...i mean it just reved and did not move, then i tried putting it in reverse same thing. so now it is standing on some rest area cause i could not drive it home.
What do you guys think i should do?..i dont really want to fix it because it will cost so much. I wanted to claim it as totaled and get money for it.
Another thing is the school is making me pay for the light but i think i am going to make it so my insurence pays for it. and doesent the school have to clean the snow because we had a lot of snow and they were not removing the snow for a week and it was really icy.
Thanks a lot but im afraid my car will not make it.

Was this in your 4-runner? Your insurance should cover all property damages including the light. Your vehicle would be covered as long as you have comprehensive. I would total it out, if possible. If the vehicle was an automatic you may have lost all the tranny fluid when the radiator went ,or, you overheated the tranny when you lost your coolant. The insurance will not cover mechanical damage incurred by trying to drive a damaged vehicle. So, if it is mechanically damaged I would hope it is totalled because you would be liable for damaged caused after the accident. Good luck and thank God you were not injured.

Find a lawyer you can call for free and get some advice. I did this after a motorcycle accident and it helped me with my decision. If the school was negligent in cleaning away snow and it led to a dangerous situation you may not be liable, if it was ice then no one can be expected to keep a driveway completely ice free in colder months. I would at the very least try to get out of paying for the light.

it may only be the tranny cable that broke or popped off.

you could always part out your truck for cash

Dude that so sucks!!! I feel your pain! You got to go slow in that white stuff.

Just think of this as a learning experience. I mean heck you where at school!

If I where close to you I would come and look at it just to try and help. Maybe there is a somebody here that's close and willing to check it out??

As far as the school being liable for the snow, Not even! The driver takes full responsibility for the driving conditions. I mean we are not talking about an icy sidewalk at a oldfoks home lol.

i really dont care about the light post or the icy condition anymore, i mean my insurence will take care of it. as for my car i think im fixing it all my self. all i need is a radiator prolly a cooling fan and a heck load of buddy work. but oh well ill fix it and and drive it and see what happens and if anything ill trade it in or something and then just buy some cheap car to get me around and try to save up some money.

Do any of you guys know which is the best way for me to bring the car back. I mean it is sitting at the rest area right now but i dont know how i should drive it home or tow it. Do you think if i put some tranny fluid in it it will at least move to my house? The rest area is like 5-10 min away from my house.

You need to figure out what is wrong first. Bring a buddy with you to check ot the truck. Bring some basic things with you like a hammer, pliers/vice grips, screwdrivers (phillips and standard) gloves, paper towels, antifreeze, ATF, and a flash light.

First thing to check is the fluid level. Start the truck up, and check the dipstick. If the fluid is fine, then its something else. The fluid should be clean and a pink/red color. If it is dark or has some particles in it, theres a problem.

If the fluid level is low, look underneath at the trans cooler (in front of the radiator) and the lines going to and from the tranny. More than likely its leaking from one of these places. Tighten up the connections or replace the hoses that are damaged.

If the fluid is fine, check the operation of the shifting cable. Have your buddy get in the truck, and you get under the truck and look at where the cable connects to the trans. Have him shift from park to drive, and look to see if the arm is moving. If the arm is not moving, the cable is damaged. You can manually pull on the arm on the tranny and shift it into park to get it home. You might need to use a hammer or pliers to move it if its bent or jammed. If the cable does move but the truck doesnt drive, well, I dont know what the problem is. Have it towed home or to a shop.

Report back to us after you check these things out.

If all else fails, and its only 5-10 minutes away, get a GOOD tow strap and have a buddy with a truck tow you back to your house.

I dont know. I've done it before. I dont see why not if you both turn your lights on and your hazzards on.

It may depend on the state. However I don't think you should tow it down the freeway at all. You can always call the DMV and they will tell you for sure.

I would take off the filter and then you'll know for sure. Basically, if you drove it around with no fluid, you are probably screwed.
