what engine did i buy?

my 87 p/u needed a new engine, so i bought an engine from someone who said it was out of an 86 p/u. i tore the head off to do the head gasket and timing set when i noticed the pistons were completely different then the 87. the 86 piston tops have a huge ring on the top of them and the timing set doesn't fit just right. what engine is this? it looked identical from the out side, same carb sensors and wiring.

I know that it doesn't look like the pistons in my '86 runner.

Aftermarket pistons, perhaps? You didn't replace a 22R with a 20R, did you?

the engine came with a carb and a non turbo manifold. if i find the id numbers where can i cross reference them? the big donut looking ring on thye top of the piston also goes up into the head. the head seems to be doomed for them. i don't know if ti means anything but the valve cover has a 22r badge on it.

I dunno... looks like perhaps performance pistons and a performance head? They definitely don't look like the pistons in the 86 22R I had. Hmmm.. Hopefully someone more informed will chime in soon...

i'm begining to think i may have an earlier motor.
my timing chain guides are just slightly off. they are for an 86 motor but it sounds like i may need the ones for an 83-84. can anyone confirm this by my pictures?

right by the alt mount it should have a casting number....20r 22r

I parted a 85 truck had a 21R (one of those 30,000 mile engines from japan I am told) Totally different critter.

81-82.3, 22R/22REC: (SBTO80)
Bore: 92mm
Stroke: 89mm
Stock Piston: (PATO80)
Notes: Best Choice for Pistons (dome top). You can just deck
the block by 2mm and make this identical to the post-85
block.

82.4-84.7, 22R/22REC: (SBTO80L)
Bore: 92mm
Stroke: 89mm
Stock Piston: (PATO80)
Notes: Best Choice for Pistons (dome top). You can just deck
the block by 2mm and make this block identical to the
post-85 block.

84.8-95, 22R/RE/REC: (SBTO80LC)
Bore: 92mm
Stroke: 89mm
Stock Piston: (PATO80L)
Notes: Best Choice for Block. Piston is Flat-top. Block is
2mm shorter than previous 22R. This gives you a little
bit more compression, but you need an adjustable cam
gear to get cam timing right.

85-88, 22RTEC: (NA)
Bore: 92mm
Stroke: 89mm
Stock Piston: (PATO80T)
Notes: Piston is dished. (?)
