Thanks for the explanation James. So It sounds like if I want to take a Auto out of a Turbo 4 Runner and put in a W56, I will have to take out the transfer case as well because it is a 23 spline and the W56 is a 21 spline so they cannot work together? Or is the auto a whole different spline??? Cause I thought I could reuse the case. Bummer.

Im pretty darn sure the bell housings are not interchangable. Not much, if anything will be for the 4cly/v6 transmissions.

The 4cyl transmission is plenty strong enough for the v6. Hell, it will last for awhile in a v8 swapped truck. The r150 is just stronger.. Old toyota = overbuilt!

$250 is fair if it works. The easy way to tell if you got an R or a W series trans is look at the bellhousing, if their is 2 holes directly at the bottom of the bellhousing were it bolts to the trans it is a W if none then it is an R.

James
By "directly at the bottom of the bellhousing" do you mean like the attached picture in post#17? The holes on the bottom sides not bottom middle right.. because thats supposedly a 4cyl W series tranny. But i creeped under my 89 3.0 v6 5speed and it too has those two bolt holes on the bellhousing..off to the sides on the bottom
