Don't skip the brushing or washing or primer stages - the paint won't stick and you'll kick yourself later.

I wonder if there are any chemicals out there that can help with the prep process? I know you can't beat good 'ole elbow grease, but I'm not opposed to chemicals either to help the paint stay on longer.

Elton's got the answer.
I would watch out for chemicals - those are aluminum wheels and you could end up pitting them. The elbow grease isn't too bad, most of the work is done with the drill. ...and you really want to do it with an electric drill. It's a lot of work to do with a rechargeable.
When I did mine, I washed the wheel a bit to try to get a some of the heavier grime off. Then I spent about 30 minutes on each wheel with the wire brush, then another wash, then a primer coat. Let the primer dry - really dry. Then hit it with two top coats of your choice of color.

I think the end result is really nice... Though, I painted mine before I got new tires hence the wheel weights showing in that pic.

I just got the new milwaukee v18 kit, it will definately take care of the cup brush job. My only question is how long after I paint them do i have to wait to drive on them?
Thanks a million to 96runner for the video writeup.
Mark: did you use a clear coat? I don't want it to look glossy, but yours don't.
