Need Quiet Muffler
I need a Quiet Muffler in a small size. What are my options?
I currently have 16" body Magnaflow and is way-way too loud.
So my best solution would be to find around that size, but Quiet Muffler as I live in highly densed area and don't want to disturb the neighbors.
I found that Walker has Quiet-Flow SS mufflers, but they are vehicle specific and I can't find one for my '74 Land Cruiser.
They do have other lines like Tru-Fit, Pro-Fit and Sound-FX, but I can't find their cross-sections or any data showing how soundwise they perform.
Does anyone have any experience with those Walker mufflers? What are your thoughts?
Do I have another options? What is your opinions and recommendations?

Try a muffler shop. I had the exhaust on my previous truck replaced just told them I wanted it stock/quiet. It was a 350, all you could hear when it was running was the clutch fan. I have a stock 4runner exhaust on my toyota it's nice and quiet.

There is no OEM exhausts in stock for 40 years old vehicle. Any newer vehicles use bigger mufflers. I have FJ40 with very short frame and wheelbase compare to modern vehicles and space is very limited.
Exhaust shop lool at the catalogues and suggested Magnaflow, but when I did it, its loud, very loud.

I think that Magna Flow muffler is a baffled muffler like the Flow Masters. The reason it's loud is the same reason my Thrush Welded was loud -- a resonator is needed to prevent the loudness (as stated before).
I have used turbo style mufflers (non stock) on my 4Runners with good results. They are a little louder than stock when accelerating but at cruising speeds are relatively quiet. I currently have a Thrush Turbo muffler (2" in/out) with 2 inch tailpipe I bought from summitracing. I like the set up...not stock but very respectable to the public and the driver inside. Before I had the turbo muffler, I had a Thrush welded which I was told after I had it removed that it's essentially a poor man's Flowmaster. What doesn't help is that the cat converter blew out, so it's essentially a pipe. Advance Auto sells a lot of different mufflers as I am sure that NAPA does as well. Like the other guys say, talk to the muffler shops and they can probably give you good advice on which direction to go also...
These mufflers I am talking about are universal. Here's a search for turbo mufflers at Summit. I think I have seen universal mufflers on line with a max engine size recommended for each one.
When I ran a search for the Toyota 4.2 liter inline 6 at Summit, this muffler came back. Check it out.
Good luck with your search.

Sorry, didn't realize it was going on an fj40
I have a mangaflow turbo muffler on my truck and it's quiet IMO. Guy at exhaust shop held it up to a flowmaster 50 I believe next to it, and the mangaflow is a straight-shot down the center whereas the flowmaster was baffled/diverted....yet the mangaflow is quieter somehow.
I also second hitting up an exhaust shop to see what they have in person. They might even be able to provide a sound comparison at a good shop.

Daved5150 nailed it. Check out Summit Racing's website. They have specs and dimensions.
I'm running a cheap Summit Turbo muffler and it is QUIET. I also run a CAT which helps a lot.
By the way daved5150, that fear the polish sausage with the hockey stick cracks me up. Maybe because I'm Polish, played hockey and I'm from Buffalo. Sorry to get off topic.

subscribed, I want the quietest free-flowing muffler I can get to replace my stock (?) setup which leaks like crazy and is loud enough I can hear it running inside. 4Crawler went with Flowmaster 50 series, I'll look into that Summit turbo too.

Hi
over here in UK you can buy a resonator tail pipe/box which fits on to end of tail pipe. sold i think by ukexhausts was developed from motorsport noise control. basicley an open ended short silencer. supposed to be able to knock sound down by 3 deciabels. dosent sound a lot but when i google measure decibels it is quite a lot of sound reduction

Back on topic...so your Summit turbo muffler is totally quiet? Mine makes a little bark at idle, nothing crazy just noticeable...and under acceleration, you can tell it's not stock. Then quiets down when cruising. But maybe that's because the cat converter on my 88 blew itself out and was hollow and my 94 has a straight pipe on it when I bought it. Maybe the cat converter acts as a "resonator" of some sort to quiet it down. When I say bark, I'm not talking Flowmaster at all. I like a little growl but nothing too loud.
Alexjet, check out Walker's site here for universal fit mufflers. I also found out now they make Dynomax and Thrush mufflers. What did you think of that Walker muffler link on Summit for the 4.2 liter?
