Need advice on used toyota purchase
Hey everyone like the subject says i need to get a new truck... So i was looking for some advice. I want to get another toyota but not a small 2wd p/u like i had. I loved my last truck to death and well I think its dead so time to move on to a new one... Yesterday as i was on my way back to work after dropping off a friend at his house I was crossing the limit like at a signal when the light turned yellow the girl in the left hand turn lane going opposite my direction made a left turn in fron of me without looking and I slammed on the brakes skidding accross the intersection into the back of her civic... She was a new driver and hesitated before going and there was nothing i could do.. So i'm looking to get another truck. what does everyone suggest? 4runner or 4wd toyota? what years were the best and what models and what not.. Thanks

little more info in what you are looking for would help. what exactly are you looking for in one (accessories, rear locker, moon roof, tow package, 4 cyl, v6..) and whats your price range?

Where are you at?
$2500 wouldn't get you much of a Toyota truck around here in OH. Best I could do was a '93 4Runner for $3000, and I put almost another $1000 into it (CV joint, radio, and standard maintenance stuff). There was a guy with an '86 (admittedly with a new bed) with a broken windshield and RATTY interior that was asking $2750 and wouldn't budge.

They go for a lot less here in the mid-Atlantic.

My theory on buying used vehicles is:
You are going to spend $5000 no matter what for a stock vehicle. If your buy a vehicle for $2500 then you will have to spend another $2500 in the near future to have it in perfect stock condition. If you buy it with any upgrades like premium stereo system, lifted, or anything else after market, the cost of all that stuff goes on top of the $5000. With the last 3 4wd vehicles I have purchased under $5000 this has been very true.
I don't know if this will help you or not. Just my 2 cents

Around here older (86-92) trucks go for about 1500-3000 and 4runners tend to be a little more, (2000-3500) my 88 4runner was 2300 and it ran good, new motor, and much replaced, but everthing that was not replace now needs to be replaced, i have probably put about 200 in parts into it. And i had to go to the machanic once that was about 500 would have been less if i had a budy that could weld. But if you look for a strong running truck than hopefully you will have a bit of a grace period that you can save some money for repairs if you need it. Look around there are always people that just figure this is a 20 year old truck with 200,000 miles so i think it would be worth about 900. Those people that don't look at kbb are the ones you want to look out for

I personally would go with a pickup. Get the 4 cylinder, they run forever. Lots of utility in those little pickups. You'll love the added benefit of 4wd. Just don't get all caught up in lifting it, adding bigger tires, lockers etc etc. Then it'll start costing you money because you won't beable to resist the temptation of taking it offroading. Just my 2 cents.

ya i know these trucks are so easy to love i had a silver 87 2wd p/u nothing special it was all stock fun to offroad but had a tendancy to not clear the ground at points. five speed no a/c, radio or power steering.. but I still loved it and nowwe'll see waht happens. I finally put a stereo in it and it only lasted a week as the rest of the body work i just had done did....

ok well it appears my truck may live through this whole thing. I took it to a body sho and with them just doing the straightening and painting it cost 2k. I got jsut over 3k for the truck and pretty much everything is done except for alignment and the bumper ad minor stuff. I fixed all the electrical and replaced urn signals side markers and head lights. I'm gonna make an appointment to have my windshield replaced and get an alignment done and my truck will be back on the road. A lot of ppl asked me why i even bothered to fix the truck and why i didn't jsut buy a new one. I guess they just don't understand why I love the truck! Its a Toyota wuts not to love they live forever!

So you bought it back? Good for you. My truck was totalled last Jan. I bought it back for $600. It was totalled again in June. I bought it back for $150. It was then hit in the body shop parking lot. I bought it back for $50 and gave it to a shop that helped me swap the motor and tranny into a straight truck I bought with a bad motor. I ended up way on top. I say if you love your truck, and it is dependable, hang onto it. Although for me, I really love the 4wd.
