Minimum Specs for Compressor to Spray Paint

I noticed a lot of people on here have sprayed (not rattle can) their rigs, just wondering what type of compressor setups you were running and brand of air dryer if you remember.

It depends on the size of the spray gun you intend to use. I've painted several cars using an old 1HP compressor and an HVLP gun.

But I can give a word of warning: You may want to stay away from the compressors sold at harbor freight. I replaced my old 1HP compressor with a new 2HP from harbor freight. What a piece of junk. I don't think it puts out a 1/4 of the air the old 1HP compressor did. It's probably made in China. You can spot these since they are 'beltless'. The older belt driven compressors are quieter and deliver more air. Stay with a name brand if you can.

What size was your tank. I guess since I'm trying to do this on a tight budget I should just rent a compressor for the time being. all the decent size belt drives are like $500

It was an 8 gallon tank which worked well.

You may want to just watch craigslist and see if a good used one turns up.

Mine is an 80gal vertical 220V unit. I use a regulator to drop 110 down to 15psi for the small gun, and lower yet for the air brush.

HOK is some killer paint.
