Backyard Paint Job on my Runner with GCI Military Paint

Thought I would share you my backyard pretty bootleg paint job. I'm not a painter and this kind of stuff really isn't my thing. lol

My runner looked as though the previous owner had gave it an Earl Schieb paint job in the past and the clear coat was coming up pretty bad, some of the paint was entirely gone and surface rust was even showing up, pretty bad on the roof. Wish I had a better pic but this will give you an idea.

After doing some research on here and elsewhere I got the confidence to attempt it myself. I decided to paint it desert tan and the bumpers etc. black. I called around for the military paint and got crazy quotes from local shops. I tried ebay and scored this stuff GCI enamel "686" Tan for $38 a gallon on ebay and even scored some rattle cans of the same stuff for like 8 bucks for touch up later

Sanded it down best I could with some 200 grit and sprayed it with some basic gray primer from rattle cans.

Then taped it up a bit with some paper and blue tape. Had my cousin come over with a paint sprayer the kind you paint houses with. Mix the paint with Mineral Spirits and sprayed away. Put on a couple THICK COATS watching and being mindful of runs.

Let it dry and it came out pretty good, I actually like it a lot, the paint didn't orange peel to bad and it's such a flat paint the imperfctions are not that noticeable. Like I said I like and I get compliments on it. Wish I had better pictures but you get the idea.

Good job! BTW, may we take a closer look at how you mounted your roof rack? I like corner mounts, especially on Fiberglas because that's where it's most rigid.

I'll take a closer pic this weekend. It's mounted by plastic anchors into the fiberglass. I don't know too much about it since it came with the truck when I bought it.

It does say N.W.OR. on each foot mount. I'm pretty sure it stands for No Weight On Rack. Its okay for my lights and even the hi, light jack and shovel but thats about it!

That actually looks really good for a backyard paint job! The color is nice, and as long as you like it that's what matters right?
