has my t-case gone bad?

Heres the problem...
1990 4runner,
chevy 350/700r4 conversion,
stock yota transfer case I believe, I can check if anyone thinks it matters.

It doesnt want to go into 4wd, just clicks and grinds instead . I was curious if the t-case is just junk or if it isnt working right with the conversion. Is there any way I can fix this w/o replacing it? Please, dont tell me to do searches, my computer wont let me.

Your computer won't let you use this boards search function? Weird.

I don't see what the transfer case would have to do with the engine, so I doubt that's your problem.

Has it worked since you've done the conversion?

Yes, was it tested after the conversion? Might be one of the shift rails is hitting the tranny or whatever adapter is used on the swap. If so, might be a matter of trimming down the length of that rail. Depending on the original tranny and t-case setup, some of the t-cases had shifter rails that pushed forward into the tranny some distance.

well thats the problem. I didnt do the swap. it was already like that when I bought it. The 4x4 didnt work when I got it but I wasnt worried at the time b/c I was just looking for a daily driver, not a trail rig. thanks for the advice though. I will look into it.

I took this into consideration and it seems it would cause a problem to trim a rail. Is there a reason some of the rails go into the tranny? I would think that if they go in the tranny for a reason then it could cause problems because they wouldnt be doing what they were supposed to. Im typically a person who pawns his problem off on others when something doesnt work right but I want to try fixing this myself for a change and could use as much info as possible.

Well, on some t-cases, the shifter is actually located inside the transmission, so the shift rails have to go forward, out of the t-case and into the transmission to hook up with the shifter. On other t-cases, ones with the shifters on top, sometimes the shift rails run a little long (why? your guess is as good as mine), but they do. On the Toyota transmission, all is OK, since there is a recess in the transmission flange to accommodate the shift rail. And when a dual t-case conversion is done, guess what is commonly done? The shift rail on the rear most t-case must be trimmed if needed to clear the back side of the forward t-case, since it lacks the recess for the shift rod. Now this may not be the cause of your problem.

Could also be that the t-case shifter was not "stabbed" into the shift rails properly when it was installed. I find I get mine in wrong half the time. There are 3-4 ways the shifter can go into the rails and only one of them works properly.

ok thanks.

Now I've got another question. I've always been kinda curious about the dual transfer cases but never quite understood it. What is the point and how is it done? I dont plan on doing it but it might be helpful to know for future reference. I realize some of my questions probably seem kind of ignorant but Im just getting back to 4x4's. There hasnt been a 4x4 in my family in about 10 years and I wasnt old enough to understand back then but now Im curious.

Full t-case in back, and a reduction box off a 2nd t-case in between the full t-case and the tranny. Advantages are a 2nd reduction box, gives you 1:1, 2.28:1, and 2.28xrear-case-low-range:1, so you get 3 low ranges instead of 1:
