Engine/transmission installment

Engine/transmission installment
So I'm doing an engine rebuild(22re) and decided to pull transmission to do 5 speed swap while engine is out. Now that I've almost finished rebuild and transmission is ready to go in, what's the easiest way to go about puting them back in??
Transmission then engine, Engine then trasnmission, or both at the same time? I have a hoist that is capable of doing them at the same time but i want the experts opinion on how to go about this. Thank you,
Nick

If you do both at the same time, wait till someone who's done it speaks up. It's a lot of weight hanging on the hoist, and seems kinda sketchy. But I know people around here do it.
IMO, if you don't do them both at the same time, putting the engine in first, then transmission, is easier.
It's not so bad to be on your back stabbing the input shaft into the clutch. I mean it's not great...but it's easier than having the tranny in, and the engine hanging from a hoist, trying to get it in position and connected to the tranny.
Getting the engine in position and on the mounts, when hanging from the hoist, is enough of a pain already without having to worry about lining it up to the transmission at the same time.

It also seems like tranny would hit ground. Almost like you'd need to raise vehicle up before dropping them in. I wish I've seen it done before. Could save a lot of time and hassle if it's as easy as it sounds. We will see!!

I really don`t want to think about trying that all in one piece.
Not saying it is impossible
You could maybe do it with 3 people 5 would be better.
You would be raising the truck lowering the hoist guiding it in.
Put the engine in then install the transmission and Transfer case as one unit.

I wish I could remember the thread...it was a couple years ago, but I know I've seen people's project threads where they did them as one unit. But I don't remember where those threads are.
You've got to be able to get the hoist up really high, then angle the tranny way down, and start moving it in...then slowly make the angle less and less steep as you creep forward.
The thread I remember, I don't think the the guy lifted his truck. But that may have been because his truck was already lifted...Like with a suspension lift. Obviously this is easier if you're sitting on 33s or 35s or something.
So yeah, it would take a few people to do all that maneuvering.
In the end, unless somebody happens to see this and speaks up about doing it as one unit, it's really not so hard to put in the tranny once the engine is in.

I did a little searching to see if I could find anything, but didn't spend too much time. Only thing I found real quick was some mention of pulling them together on the Marlin Crawler forum.
Consensus seemed to be "don't do it".
To get it at the angle you'd need, you're talking about having the hoist up 10-12' in the air, with all that weight and bulk hanging off it. I think if you managed to do it, you'd probably figure you wouldn't do it that way again next time...

With out the truck way up in the air, I dont think you would be able to get the angle to get the transfer case to go in. My 86, I have the core support removable as it was missing it when I got it. That is the only way to install the motor, tranny, and tcase all at once that I know of. I will say with the core support removable it is sweet for installing it as one assembly but would not recommend making the core support removable unless you are in a situation that I was.

Me and a guy off craigslist pulled my 3VZE and transmission AND transfer case AND front drive shaft attached all out in one pull. It was a pain in the ass, but it made it out.
I also just put a 7mgte with transmission and transfer case attached in my truck. Was a piece of cake, but I did cut the front cross member off which makes it a breeze. HIGHLY recommend people do this and then bolt it back in place.
If it were me, I would mate the transmission to the engine outside of the truck. much easier to torque all the bolts in place and get it all put together. It's really not that bad if you have an extra hand putting it in one piece. DO get a load balancer though. much easier.

I know that michell states to pull them together did it once... What a joke, mount the motor and them stab the trans way less head ache! Will be attempting to install a motor with the trans still installed in a matter of days. But I have a felling that I will be pulling the trans to install.

Haha let me know how that goes. I'm still a week out. I'm just gonna do it engine than transmission
