Which air filter?
#2
I had the K&N and it appeared to be letting alot of dirt get through. There was always alot of dirt in the airbox past the filter. I switched to the Amsol at the recomondation of some of the other fourm members.

I'm using a K&N Drop-In Filter in my Xterra, and a K&N Cone Filter (FIPK Kit) in my 4Runner, and have had no problems with them at all. I periodically pull them out, and haven't found any dirt past them. I've heard some bad things about the K&N but I've had one in my 4Runner since a week after I bought it, and then upgraded to the FIPK Kit, and I clean it every 7000 Miles or so, and I make sure I don't over oil it, and I've never had a problem with them. And until Amsoil makes one for a 2002 Xterra or 2nd Gen 4Runner I'll stick with K&N.

I've been using the Amsoil air filter mainly because I had heard and read a lot of info regarding the superior filtering capabilities of the Amsoil over the K&N. I was probably also biased by the fact that a friend of mine is an Amsoil dealer...

Amsoil is not avail for the 2nd gen... I'm still testing a Ram-Air filter I got off of ebay a month ago. It does not have as much surface area (it is disk-shaped, like a frisbee) but has a 3 layer foam filter element that seems to be working really well so far. I think it is slightly more restrictive than the K&N I had but then again the K&N let oil & gunk pass through...

I use an AFE Filter. They make the filters for TRD, so I'm using a TRD but without the name. No problems.

Lets think about this for a second....
I may not be a real smart man, but I would think that there is a lot of air moving or blowing through the intake ducting in the engine. Just for the sake of argument lets say that this is so.
If you took a teaspoon of very light dust like say babby powder and dumped it on your desk top in a small pile. The you take a blow dryer and aimed it at that little pile of babby powder and turned it on full blast for say a minute or two, how much of that pile of babby powder would still be there??
If it all blows away, then can you say it was never there?? Where is it now??
Like I said it is a big mystery. Maybe someday someone much smarter then I am will figure all this stuff out.
